Madison County Arts Council: Art on the Island is September 24

The Madison County Arts Council brings the fifth annual Art on the Island festival to the grounds of beautiful Blannahassett Island in downtown Marshall Saturday, September 24. Free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event showcases local artists, craftspeople, food, music, and kids’ activities in a picturesque riverside setting.

“Our park is located on an island in the middle of the French Broad River. Families and art lovers alike enjoy the setting, which includes swing sets and jungle gyms,” says event organizer Laura Boosinger, of the Madison County Arts Council. “Food is provided by local restaurants and The First Presbyterian Church, who smoke up some fine barbecue. Folks can bring a picnic or create a picnic from the festival food vendors and the park is dotted with picnic tables underneath the trees.”

Blannahassett Island is the home of Marshall High Studios, a wide variety of working artist studios located in the renovated 1925 building that formerly housed Marshall High School. In addition to these studio owners, the festival will showcase as many as 50 other local artists.

“Art on the Island is a laid back event created to give the local visual arts community a beautiful setting to display and sell their work,” says Katherine Graham, a participating Raku artist from the Jupiter area. “We also always have a booth where kids of all ages can create something to take home.”

Connie Molland will bring woodcrafted items for the kitchen from her studio Rose Hollow Connections, in the Petersburg community of Madison County. “People who come up to Art on the Island aren’t in a hurry. They linger. They ask questions. They want to know how I make my products. They are interested in getting to know me as an artist.”
