Through October 3, Chiesa Italian Restaurant in Montford will host “Three Colorful Women,” an exhibition of works by painters Joan Martha, Bee Adams, and Sally Bryenton.

These three artists met while painting with the Asheville Urban Landscape Project. Realizing how well their paintings complement one another, they combined their individual works for this special exhibit.

Joan, a newcomer to the Asheville area, previously lived in Costa Rica for more than 40 years where she taught drawing and painting at the University of Costa Rica. “I often incorporate watercolor pencil to add a graphic dimension to my work,” says Joan. “These landscapes represent all three of these techniques: watercolor, pencil, and collage.”

Calling the mountains her home since 1978, Sally previously owned a jewelry business that featured enamel jewelry. In 1991, she chose to focus her artistic efforts on murals and interior painted surfaces. Retiring from commercial endeavors, Sally now paints landscapes; however, as she puts it, “Artists don’t really retire, they just change mediums or venues.” Her works have been in galleries across the Southeast.

Bee uses acrylics, watercolors, and a variety of media. She participated in the Denver art scene for more than 40 years before moving to Asheville four years ago. She currently paints with the Asheville Urban Landscape Project and the WNC Plein Air Painters. While living in Brussels, Bee captured the architecture of Europe with quick sketches, later sharing her work in several exhibitions. Her love of capturing unique architecture followed her to Asheville, where she paints vibrantly colored renditions of well-known buildings.

Located at 152 Montford Avenue in Asheville, Chiesa is open Tuesday through Sunday from 5–9 p.m.
