Unframed II—New Works at BlackBird Frame & Art

New Works at BlackBird Frame & Art

Vestiges #1, monotype collage by Bobbi Allen

BlackBird Frame & Art presents Unframed II—New Works beginning with an opening reception from 6:30–7:30 p.m., Friday, November 11, and running through December 31. The show will feature recent prints by members of the Asheville Printmakers, an informal group whose membership includes experienced and well-known artists as well as burgeoning printmakers.

The work employs a variety of relief and intaglio methods as well as monotypes and alternative photographic printing processes. The prints will be displayed unframed, with a selection of frames placed nearby to illustrate their effect on the final presentation of the pieces.

“Last year, visitors and exhibitors alike were highly enthusiastic about the success of the show,” says Laura Ladendorf, an Asheville Printmakers member. “The presentation of unframed works with possible framing choices nearby to experiment with was unique and intriguing.”

Original prints, typically made in small editions from a single printing plate, offer relative affordability and have special value in that the artist and printer, often one and the same, are challenged to use specialized skills and techniques through multiple processes. The prints on display will represent a broad range of techniques and subject matter. And, because the show is not themed, the pieces also depict a variety of topics and styles.

“Fine art prints are magnificent works that have a place in every serious collection but remain accessible and affordable for everyone,” says John Horrocks, owner of BlackBird Frame & Art. “Several of the pieces sold at last year’s show were bought as gifts.”

BlackBird Frame & Art is at 365 Merrimon Avenue, in Asheville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to the gallery is free. Learn more at blackbirdframe.com or call 828.225.3117.
