Arts Council Launches New Program: City of 1,000 Easels

Post Date: 09.14.2010

Hundreds of artists descended on downtown Asheville, set up their easels, brushes, and paints, and shared their creative process with the community. “City of 1,000 Easels” was a pilot program of The Asheville Area Arts Council and was designed to promote the role of arts in the community by showcasing the magnitude of the visual arts sector through a self-guided walking tour among individual artists.

Established artists and amateurs alike had designated “spots” throughout the downtown area and crafted new pieces of art. Artists had the option to participate in a silent auction of their work. Many said that they’ll donate a portion of proceeds to the Arts Council.

“Asheville is widely recognized as a cultural arts destination, but I’m not sure anyone truly understands just how expansive the creative community is in this city,” says Asheville Area Arts Council program director Graham Hackett. “To share the dynamics of our unique arts culture, we’re delivering straight to the public.” Graham, who became the organization’s program director in early August, is the founding director of Catalyst Productions and POETIX Experiential Arts Program.
