UNCA Continues Craft Presentations
Post Date: 02.16.2011
UNC Asheville’s Craft Studies Initiative continues its series, “Meet the Maker: Conversations of Meaning with Craftspeople,” with a presentation by Windgate Fellowship recipients Andrea Donnelly and Dustin Farnsworth. The evening includes a lecture and reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, at Owen Hall, room 302.
Andrea's works in textiles have been exhibited across the United States and Turkey. Her upcoming exhibit, “Andrea Donnelly: Mindbody,” has just opened at Artspace Gallery in Raleigh. Her work will also be included in the 2011 Rijswijk Textile Biennial exhibit in the Netherlands. Andrea currently lives in Virginia, where she operates a hand-woven scarf business.
Dustin's work includes woodworking, functional art, and printmaking. He has been featured in more than 30 shows across the United States, as well as Woodwork Magazine, Sculptural Pursuit, and I.D. Magazine. Two of Farnsworth’s pieces were published in 500 Cabinets (Lark Books, 2010).
Dustin received the prestigious Windgate Fellowship in 2010 as a senior at Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. Andrea received hers in 2007 after graduating from North Carolina State University in December of 2006. The Windgate Fellowship is administered by UNC Asheville's Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, located in Hendersonville, and is awarded to undergraduate students whose work relates to craft.
Two additional “Meet the Maker” lectures will be held during the spring semester. Ann Millett-Gallant, educator and author of “The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art,” will speak on Thursday, March 17. Millett-Gallant is a lecturer at UNC Greensboro. Her research analyzes the work of disabled artists and the representation of disability in visual culture. Amy Tavern and Daniel Marinelli, resident artists at Penland School of Crafts, will present their work on Monday, April 4.
