Works of Ward H. Nichols on Display at Blue Spiral 1

Post Date: 04.01.2011

An exhibition of oils by Ward H. Nichols, one of the region’s foremost realists, opens at Blue Spiral 1 with an artist reception from 5–8 p.m. on Thursday, April 7. Paintings of vehicles, tools, structures, and the rural landscape defined by a sense of wit and wonder—Nichols’ work is highly praised for its remarkable detail.

The painter does not shy away from a challenge. A multitude of bubbles, the gnarled surface of an old tree, sinuous reflections over contours of a shiny automobile, or a wall of peeling paint—all share a definitive complexity to render. When painting such difficult to capture scenes, unique issues emerge that the artist must resolve. Nichols has mastered fine details like highlights and shadows cast over minute areas to suggest depth, and he has the ability to depict whatever he is inclined to paint.

Nichols’ paintings often feature clever out-of-place elements and trompe-l’œil details which seem to suggest the artist saying, “Pay attention, but don’t take it all too seriously.”

This exhibition is on display for beginning April 1 and continuing through June 25, shown along with ceramic, glass, and steel sculptures by Kenneth Baskin, Rick Beck, and Rudy Rudisill, respectively. Also running concurrently: abstract paintings and pastels by Will Henry Stevens (1881–1949) Southern Modernist; Marlene Jack, functional porcelain; and Ink & Imagery, a southeastern printmaking invitational featuring work of eight regional artists making their debut at the gallery.

Blue Spiral 1 is located at 38 Biltmore Avenue in downtown Asheville. The gallery is open from 1–6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon–5 p.m. on Sunday. For further information, visit bluespiral1.com or call 828.251.0202.
