Cottages of Spring Mountain Festival

Post Date: 09.01.2010

As the precursor to the Industrial Revolution’s modern factories, cottage industries have evolved through the years. Today, these small, home-based businesses are more focused on the environment and sustainability than they are contributing to mass production. And the movement is flourishing in Buncombe County.

From 11–3 p.m. on October 2, the Spring Mountain Community Center, 807 Old Fort Road in Fairview, will host its second Cottages of Spring Mountain Festival. It is a celebration of the diverse entrepreneurial spirit of local cottage industries. Festivalgoers can enjoy children’s activities, strolling through the park, an array of vendors, a simple lunch, fried apple pies by Maria, and music by the Flying Rock band.

Discover the burgeoning talent in areas including arts and crafts, farm goods, services and trades, and collectibles. “The festival will highlight our local talent while giving the community an opportunity to buy local farm goods, enjoy the creations of artists and crafters, connect with local entrepreneurs, service providers, and non-profits,” says festival organizer Carolyn Smith. “Our vision is to give much-needed publicity to these small, home-based businesses to enhance their efforts and infuse community enthusiasm into their products and services.”

The event is produced by the Spring Mountain Community Development Club and is free to the public. Vendor space is available for $10 (ten-foot space) in advance and $15 on the day of the festival.
