Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC Seeks New Volunteers
Post Date: 09.01.2010
Just a little time can make a big difference with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina (BBBS). The organization’s Back-to-School Volunteer Recruitment Drive, which runs through October 17, is aiming to recruit 60 new volunteers in the next two months.
The drive coincides with the Little Big Ride, a 41-day, cross-country bike ride by dedicated Big Brothers Big Sisters Guam volunteer Joseph Husslein. Inspired by the movie, The Bucket List, Joseph’s cycling endeavor September 12–October 22 will raise money and awareness for BBBS agencies across the United States.
Through the course of the ride, stories of Little and Big duos will be featured on the event website, littlebigride.com. Locally, BBBS in Asheville will celebrate Joseph’s arrival on October 17 before he rides the final stretch of his journey to Charleston, South Carolina.
Volunteers are asked to share one hour a week with an elementary age student in school-based and after-school programs. Volunteers are also needed for the community-based effort that focuses on matching youth from single parent homes with caring adult mentors. The adult and youth share two outings a month either on weeknights or weekends engaging in mutual interests. Male mentors are especially needed.
