Shop Talks Of February 2011

Post Date: 02.01.2011

macWorks

Although most of us use computers, the technology behind these machines can be intimidating. Finding someone we can depend on and trust to keep them working properly is critical.

John Dickson, owner of macWorks, has been working on Macintosh computers for 20 years. Although John holds a degree in biology from Warren Wilson College, his love of Macs trumped a life in the lab. “I was teaching at AB Tech when they switched the computers over to Macintosh and I was hooked,” says John. “I like the way the Macintosh works, they are very intuitive.”

John dispels the myth that Macs are primarily for the technologically inclined or the artistic consumer, explaining that they are indeed very straightforward. In fact, he says, the operating systems are less vulnerable to viruses than the PC and the operating systems run like the Energizer Bunny.

John’s clients include Mission Hospitals, Harrah’s Casino, AB Tech, US Forest Service, and Haywood Regional Medical Center. One of his most loyal, enthusiastic clients is a self-taught, 89-year-old Mac wizard, and most have been with him since he started in 2003. John offers whole-system installation, networking, software and hardware installation, upgrades, and troubleshooting, as well as repair, instruction, and consulting.

Blackbird Frame & Art

Pat and John Horrocks, owners of BlackBird Frame & Art, have been providing high quality, affordable, and distinctive framing products and services for 20 years.

BlackBird features regional artists and a frame selection rivaling any big-city studio. Choices include frames of leather, welded steel, molded acrylic, hand-wrapped fabric mats, carved and gilded frames, and authentic Arts & Crafts designs. An onsite workshop facilitates fast service and quality control.

“This space combines the gallery, frame design, and workshop in one building,” says John. “We have a superb staff of experienced framers offering interesting and creative designs, expertly crafted.”

From a child’s art to priceless masterpieces and irreplaceable memorabilia, each job is treated with the utmost respect. “People are often surprised at how affordable it can be. Our pricing is usually less than the chain craft stores,” says Pat. “With items of monetary or sentimental value, the most important element is its preservation, and a close second is design, so experience is essential.”

The gallery hosts events from fund-raisers to artists’ receptions. Stop in to see two new featured artists, figurative painter (our cover artist) Marsha Hammel and ceramicist Nancy Livingston.

Visit 365 Merrimon Avenue or online at blackbirdframe.com. The shop can be reached at 828.225.3117.

Schumacher Homes

Schumacher Homes does things a little differently than most custom home builders. Seemingly impervious to the housing market pitfalls, Schumacher continues to sell and recently reached 9,000 homes sold since the company started in 1992.

Founded by Paul Schumacher, the idea behind the success is a streamlined process where volume purchasing and secure relationships with top name companies translate to a lower price per square foot while emphasizing high quality. Their 14-step process meticulously covers every aspect of building a custom home on your lot, from picking the perfect plan to the last finishing detail. This allows them to provide upfront, itemized pricing before any dirt is moved.

Building a custom home can be a trying experience and the staff at Schumacher understands this. Having hundreds of customizable home plans from which to choose—from under 1,000 sq. ft. to more than 8,000 sq. ft.—and interior and exterior design choices made under one roof, the procedure becomes much more efficient. Standard features include Anderson Windows, Delta Faucets, and Owens Corning building materials. Each home comes with a ten-year structural warranty and the company can also assist with financing.

Visit the design center at 336 Rockwood Road, suite 101 or online at schumacherhomes.com. The center can be reached at 828.684.8836.

Chammies Carwash/Jiffylube

Alan Jackson has been in the oil change business since 1982. After 19 years in the corporate environment, Alan made the transition to owner/operator with the acquisition of Chammies Car Wash & Jiffy Lube (720 Hendersonville Road) in 2001. He now runs three locations, Asheville, Hendersonville (1600 Four Seasons Boulevard), and Brevard (941 Asheville Highway).

Originally from Indiana, Alan says the move, both physically and professionally, has been good. Many of his employees have worked for him for years and understand the standards by which he operates. “I love what I am doing,” he says. “I’ve learned that to be successful you have to 1) Fulfill customer’s expectations, 2) Deliver on the promises you make, and 3) Give the customer a good value for their dollar.”

The atmosphere is very friendly and the attendants are extremely helpful. The Asheville shop offers a full-service wash along with automotive services including oil change, state inspections, tire rotation, fluid maintenance, fuel injection service, and radiator flush among others. Wash services range in price from $6.99 for the Exterior Wash to $20.99 for the “Whole 9 Yards.” Alan’s hands-on approach ensures quality service to his customers.

Visit 720 Hendersonville Road in Asheville or online at chammiescarwash.com. The local shop can be reached at 828.277.9767.
