Purple Crayon Workshop: Creating Children’s Picture Books

January 20 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Thinking of writing or illustrating a book for kids? Whether it’s for the children in your family, or for publication, award-winning writer Linda Lowery will walk you through the basics of what makes a terrific picture book. Since the writing always comes first (yep, even for Maurice Sendak!), in this workshop, you’ll focus on how to:
– Discover fresh story ideas
– Find your natural, authentic voice
– Play around with rhythm and rhyme
– Work within industry-standard format, page count, word count
– Give the illustrator creative freedom (even if you yourself are the artist)
– Allow the art to compliment and contrast with text
– Create a 32-page draft dummy (storyboard)
By the end of class, you’ll have a draft outline for a book of your own and a clear overview of how to proceed on your project.

Note: This workshop is in two parts, on two consecutive days.
