Diana Wortham Theater's Mainstage Series: Pilobolus

Post Date: 01.01.2011

Begun as an experiment in 1971 and (for some delightful reason, no doubt) named for a fungus, Pilobolus has wowed audiences around the globe, including the opening ceremonies for three Olympics and as featured guests at the 2007 Academy Awards. The internationally renowned dance company will perform at Diana Wortham Theatre at 8 p.m. on both January 21 and 22.

Acclaimed for its mix of humor, invention, and drama, Pilobolus was started by three guys and one puzzled professor in a Dartmouth College dance class back in 1970. It was survival of the giddiest, as the three non-dancers goofed around with the only material they’d been given—themselves—and became tangled in various science-inspired poses and movements. Forty years later, this hugely popular dance company continues to combine gravity-defying athleticism and grace with a profound sense of unity.

The Washington Post says of the dance troupe, “Pilobolus embodies a large part of what the best in contemporary dance is all about: discovery. Making something new with the same standard body parts the rest of us have.” Pilobolus has been seen by 120 million domestic viewers, broadcast in 200 countries, and performed live in 64 countries for over four million people.

Tickets for Pilobolus ($45 for adults, $43 for seniors, $40 for students, and $12 for children) are available by calling the theatre’s box office at 828.257.4530 or visiting dwtheatre.com.
