Adam Raferty Plays Mountain Spirit
Post Date: 07.01.2011
Adam Raferty brings his funky fingerstyle guitar to Mountain Spirit Coffeehouse at 7 P.M. on Sunday, July 31. Born and raised in Harlem, Adam started playing blues guitar at age six, and later played in the New York City subway before progressing to the most upscale music rooms in New York and abroad. He’s led his own band through Europe, produced his own albums, and never doubted for one minute his sole purpose in life is to play the guitar.
Best known simply as Raf, he has played as a first-call guitarist with some of the greatest musicians on the planet, at countless music festivals in the United States and Europe, and in concert halls on both continents.
He’s taught countless workshops, written two books, and has produced an instructional DVD in which he teaches finger-style versions of Stevie Wonder’s most popular songs.
In just a few years, he’s become a YouTube sensation (his views are in the millions). Among Raf’s musical innovations is the ability to play two simultaneous melodies on the guitar and do hip-hop flavored “human beatbox” with his mouth at the same time. You have to hear it to believe it.
His solo versions of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” are his most frequently requested songs and can be heard on YouTube as well. Bass lines, horn parts, and vocals are replicated in a way that will make you jump out of your seat.
Doors open at 6:30 P.M. and show begins at 7 P.M. Tickets are by donation, suggested $15 for adults, $8 for students, and no charge for those under 14. Mountain Spirit Coffeehouse is located at Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Edwin Place in Asheville. For information, visit uuasheville.org or call 828.299.4171.
