Asheville Lyric Opera to Present Puccini’s Madame Butterfly

Post Date: 10.01.2011

Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly will be staged by Asheville Lyric Opera (ALO) at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 7–8 at Diana Wortham Theatre.

This three-act opera takes place in Nagasaki, Japan, at the turn of the century when B.F. Pinkerton, a young Navy officer, hires a geisha named Cio- Cio-San as his temporary wife. While she falls deeply in love with him, Lt. Pinkerton treats her as the temporary lover he perceives her to be, saying he intends to marry a “real” American wife someday.

This opera classic will feature soprano Jennifer Davison in the title role in her debut performance with ALO. Brian Cheney is cast as Lt. B.F. Pinkerton. Jon Truitt, director of last season’s The Magic Flute, returns to direct this beautiful new production.

Tickets are available by calling the Diana Wortham Theatre box office at 828.257.4530. For more information, visit ashevillelyric.org.
