Duhks Headline Pisgah Brewery Concert

Through lineup changes and a recent hiatus for members to pursue other projects, the Duhks are nearing a decade as a band. The Canadian group with an eclectic sound will perform at Pisgah Brewing on Friday, October 7, in a show that begins at 7:30 p.m. and offers local act Dehlia Low as the opener.
Duhks founder and banjo player Leonard Podolak says he is happy that the band is back together. “We are excited about the tour,” Leonard says. “We love playing together.” He said the band members have learned some valuable lessons.
“The way we ran the first nine years we were doing it, it was ten months a year and it was this all-encompassing thing,” Leonard says of the band’s past schedule. “It was great but as musicians and people it’s important to check out other things.”
Leonard just finished recording an old-time music album in Ireland. Siblings Sarah (lead singer) and Christian (drummer) Dugas have been pursuing their own music, which included a performance at Pulp in Asheville back in the spring. Guitarist Jordan McConnell has focused on making guitars and did some touring in Japan. And fiddler Tania Elizabeth has pursued other interests as well.
“We understood that there are other parts of art we need to do separately,” Leonard says. “Now that we’ve seen what it’s like to do other things, we know there are still people who love the band and performing as the Duhks can be one of the things each of us is doing.”
Describing the sound of the Duhks is always a challenge—even to band members. Leonard simply called the band’s music “a mosaic—a cornucopia of traditions.” As such, it’s been tough for the Canadian band to get a foothold on U.S. radio. With sounds that touch on folk, bluegrass, old-time, Americana, rock, and world music, Duhks music is hard to categorize but entertaining to fans.
“We play music that we all love,” Leonard says. “It’s the result of a celebration and battle of ideas and influences. It’s five different musical journeys we’ve all been on separately and together.”
Opening the show is Asheville’s own Dehlia Low. Supporting its new album Ravens & Crows, the five-piece group has an eclectic sound of its own, sometimes called “Appalachiagrassicana” by the band.
The show with the Duhks with Dehlia Low will also feature Nashville’s Space Capone playing a late-night spot. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Pisgah Brewery’s Inside Taproom. Tickets are $15. For more information contact Pisgah Brewery online or call 828.669.0190
