The six-piece indie band Beirut comes to The Orange Peel in Asheville December 5. The group consists of Zach Condon (vocals, trumpet, ukulele), Perrin Cloutier ((accordion, piano), Nick Petree (drums, percussion), Paul Collins (electric bass, upright bass), Kelly Pratt (trumpet, euphonium), and Ben Lanz (trombone, tuba, piano).

We caught up with bassist Paul Collins to ask him a few questions before Beirut's big December show in Asheville.

What are the challenges for a nontraditional pop band (with horns, an accordion, etc.) to get noticed in today's music environment?

The challenges for pop musicians are still the same— writing good songs, making good records, and having a good live show.

The band released The Rip Tide at the end of August. Now about three months later, how would you describe the album's success?

Our fans really seem to enjoy the album, and we are tremendously proud of it. It's also Zach's first full length on Pompeii (his record label). I would say it is definitely a success in our eyes.

Beirut has already traveled extensively internationally and your tour takes you to New Zealand, Australia, and Japan soon. How is the band being received internationally and is that different from its recognition levels in the United States?

We have wonderful fans all over the world. People in Portugal, Brazil, and Mexico, seem to be the most vocally appreciative. However, it is a popular misconception that Beirut is more popular outside of the United States. The United States has always been very good to us. We have a fan base here that is as strong as anywhere abroad.

Paul, you've done some DJ gigs for after parties on the tour. Will you be doing that in Asheville? How about for the rest of the tour?

I would love to do it in Asheville, however, I haven't looked into it just yet! I played a show at Broadway's once with my band Soft Landing. Maybe that would be a good place for an after party.

Of the recent success you've had, what stands out as a highlight?

Mexico City! We just did two nights there, and the fans gave us more love that we could handle. They are the best.

Beirut plays at The Orange Peel December 5 in a show for those ages 18 and up. Perfume Genius opens the concert, which begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $28 at the door. For tickets, visit theorangepeel.net. For more information about Beirut, visit beirutband.com.
