“Interpreting the Cup” Exhibit at Crimson Laurel Gallery

Post Date: 11.01.2011

Crimson Laurel Gallery, located in Bakersville, is presenting “Interpreting the Cup,” an international cup exhibit curated by Jason Bige Burnett. The exhibition will run from November 5 through the end of the year. An opening reception will be held on November 5 at 6 p.m.

Artists from all over the world have been selected to represent how they interpret the ceramic cup through their range of processes, influences, and intentions. More than 400 cups, representing 84 of the finest potters from around the world, will be on display.

Jason, a talented North Carolina potter, selected the artists based on the various possibilities found among firing methods, construction techniques, and surface design. He says he’s been fascinated by how artists use traditional and more contemporary processes, from digging their own clay to slip casting with commercially made slips.

Among the things to notice are the range of narrative discovered on the surfaces of cups by Ayumi Horie, and the beauty of form in the pieces by Gwendolyn Yoppolo. Jason says he also found a sense of intimacy in Susan Feagin’s collaged fragments of written letters and journal pages.

Crimson Laurel Gallery is located at 23 Crimson Laurel Way in Bakersville. For more information, visit crimsonlaurelgallery.com or call 828.688.3599.
