Brett Butler Brings a New Performance to Asheville
By Tim W. Jackson - Post Date: 01.27.2012
Many probably remember Brett Butler as the star of 1990s sitcom Grace Under Fire. Others may recall her stand-up comedy. While Brett is still an actress and comedian, she has added another pursuit to her resume: psychic and medium.
The affable Southerner with roots in Alabama and Georgia has discovered in recent years that she is claircognizant, which means she has a gift of simply knowing that something is correct without any doubt. In addition, she sees into the spirit world and will offer psychic readings along with her stand-up comedy in “An Evening of Laughter with Brett Butler” on Saturday, February 4, at The Center for Spiritual Living in Asheville.
If Brett has fallen off your radar in recent years, the February show will be a great opportunity to see a bit of the old Brett along with the new one. Her wry wit hasn’t gone anywhere. About her gig at The Center for Spiritual Living, she joked, “Well the Baptist church wouldn’t have me.” In truth, Brett is connected to The Center through Dale Allen Hoffman, who is noted as an Aramaic spirituality mystic. Dale and Brett have been friends for several years and Dale will introduce Brett in the February 4 show.
As for that show, Brett says she’s getting excited about it. “I’m pretty tickled,” she says. While Brett is a veteran of the stage, adding her psychic talents to the mix is new. She says she added this to her stand-up because everybody has different audiences. “Someone might be more amenable to hearing about the spirit world in a stand-up environment,” she says. “I don’t evangelize about this stuff and I don’t look to convert people. This is just part of me now and I want to share that.”
While psychic abilities may have always been a part of Brett, she has only fully realized it fairly recently. After Grace Under Fire was canceled, Brett went through some difficult times. She found herself immersed in depression and substance abuse and her marriage ended. The money that had been pouring in dried up quickly. Her life was a mess. She made the effort to get sober and then bought a farm in Georgia. She realized, though, that being sober and in a new place didn’t chase away all her problems. She had gained weight. Her career was still lacking. “I was unhappy,” she says.
But it was at this Southern farm where she began tapping into her psychic abilities. At first she thought the universe had aimed for someone else and hit her by mistake. But then she became more enthused about the idea. She called and told her mom the news. A couple days later, her mom called back to remind Brett of the imaginary friends she had as a child. “You’ve seen spirits your whole life.”
Brett then started keeping a diary in which she remembered past psychic experiences that she had once passed off as coincidence or a simple anomaly. “I felt like I needed a teacher,” she says, “but I was out in the middle of nowhere. So I began to look at my own books—stuff I had obtained over the years—and I actually had a lot of books on the subject. Brett says she began to immerse herself in the books and read information online. Suddenly her life began to make more sense.
“Unlike at any other time in my life, I am delighted by the unknown,” Brett says. Yet a few things are known. Brett will be back on television soon. She landed a recurring role in Charlie Sheen’s upcoming Anger Management series, which debuts on FX in June. She plays a bartender while Charlie plays an anger management counselor. (For real.) Filming begins in March.
“An Evening of Laughter with Brett Butler” takes place Saturday, February 4, at 7 p.m. the Center for Spiritual Living at 2 Science of Mind Way in Asheville. Tickets are $22 in advance or $25 the day of the show. For more information, call 828.253.2325 or visit cslasheville.org. After the show Brett will be available for autographs and a meet-and-greet.
