From Music to Comedy, There’s Something for Everyone
Post Date: 01.01.2012
Three great shows are coming your way at Diana Wortham Theatre this month. First up, the Depue Brothers Band (January 19, 8 p.m.), then Susan Werner and David Wilcox (January 21, 8 p.m.), followed by “Selected Shorts” with host Isaiah Sheffer and featuring L.A. Law’s Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker (January 28, 8 p.m.)
Authentic bluegrass performed by classically trained virtuosi, The DePue Brothers merge technical prowess with a highly creative and infectious joy. The group consists of three brothers joined by several dynamically skilled musical comrades to create the full sound of the DePue Brothers Band.
Their music encompasses a blend of bluegrass, classical, and rock genres. Each DePue Brother is a classical virtuoso violinist in his own right, bringing rich and diverse talent to the overall sound. As a family they have been making music together for over 25 years. They were named the “Musical Family of America” by presidential decree in 1989, were the subject of a nationally televised PBS documentary in 1993, and two of the DePues were featured in the film documentary Music From the Inside Out in 2005. Their latest full-length album, Weapons of Grass Destruction, was released in 2009.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for students, and $12 for children 12 and under. Student Rush day-of-show tickets.
Incredible singer-songwriters Susan Werner and David Wilcox take the stage to share a lively musical conversation that slides easily from jazz to folk and pop. They playfully return each other’s verbal serves with their respective takes on life. Her philosophical stance is wry, whereas his is more sweet. Together, they cover the conversational gamut in a wonderful evening of top singing and guitar magic.
Called the “empress of the unexpected” by National Public Radio, Susan was raised in rural Iowa, and began her professional music career in Philadelphia, after studying classical voice at Temple University.
David says he was inspired to play guitar after watching a fellow student play in a stairwell at Antioch College in Ohio. After transferring to Warren Wilson College in 1981, he began taking music seriously and kicked-off his performing career, developing his own playing style in the process.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for students, and $12 for children 12 and under. Student Rush day-of-show tickets are $10.
Golden Globe Award winner Jill Eikenberry and multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor Michael Tucker headline the program Selected Shorts: Lots of Laughs. They are perhaps best known for their roles in the popular NBC legal drama L.A. Law (1986–1994). In addition to their working relationship and the special rapport they’ve developed after several years of working together on stage and television, they have also been married for almost 40 years. Together with Isaiah Sheffer, host of public radio’s “Selected Shorts,” they will bring short works of humorous literature to life in a unique night of performance. Included will be a trio of hilarious and provocative tales about three modern couples in unexpected predicaments, sometimes behaving rather badly. Some stories contain adult themes and content, and therefore child tickets are not available for this performance.
Tickets are $35 for adults and $30 for students. Student Rush day-of-show tickets (with valid I.D.) are $10.
