“Jazzical 3” and “Guitar Gusto: July Concerts from AmiciMusic

This is chamber music as it was intended—in an actual “chamber” with food and drink. Now in its sixth year, AmiciMusic is offering several concerts with decidedly different themes, but all in relaxed and intimate settings with refreshments and libations.

“Jazzical 3” features exciting music by Claude Bolling, including movements from his two Flute Suites written for Jean-Pierre Rampal, as well as selections from his Cello Suite written for Yo Yo Ma. In addition, musicians Lea Kibler (flute), Franklin Keel (cello), Daniel Weiser (piano), Will Beasley (bass), and Justin Watt (drums) will perform a mix of classical melodies interspersed with passages of improvisational jazz.

There will be four performances: at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at a house in Hendersonville; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at Nightingale Loft at 52 Broadway in Asheville; at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at Isis Restaurant and Music Hall; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, at White Horse Black Mountain.

“Guitar Gusto” features guitarist Steve Newbrough and pianist Daniel Weiser performing an imaginative mix of music composed by Luigi Boccherini, Anton Diabelli, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Joaquín Rodrigo. Steve, who is the executive director of The Summit Academy of Music in Asheville, has performed across the country, including with the internationally acclaimed Minneapolis Guitar Quartet. Daniel, the founder of AmiciMusic, was the 1996 US Artistic Ambassador of Music, performing in more than 20 countries.

AmiciMusic will present four performances of “Guitar Gusto.” These will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 22, at Isis Restaurant and Music Hall; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at White Horse Black Mountain; at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at a house concert in Hendersonville; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at The Cathedral of All Souls.

In addition Daniel will present “By George,” a solo house concert (tickets are $25) celebrating the music of George Gershwin in East Asheville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 7.

AmiciMusic will also present a fundraising concert to help save the Saluda Depot, the historic train station at the beautiful Orchard Inn in Saluda. This is an encore performance of “Live from the USO,” with soprano Amanda Horton, baritone Jonathan Ross, and Daniel Weiser on piano.

Tickets are $50, which includes hors d’oeuvres, and are available through AmiciMusic. Tickets are $35 for the house concerts (amicimusic.org); tickets are $15 for the concerts at Isis (isisasheville.com); for the concerts at White Horse Black Mountain, tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door (whitehorseblackmountain.com); tickets are $25 for the concert at Nightingale Loft (amicimusic.org); and for the concert at The Cathedral of All Souls, tickets are $20 general admission and $15 for church members (amicimusic.org).
