At Home In Biltmore Town Square Park

Asheville consistently ranks high in “Top Ten” lists of places to buy second homes or to retire. The city and the surrounding region have everything people are looking for: proximity to urban centers, plenty of recreational opportunities, decent weather, and future growth potential.

Although those things were important to Don and Kay Elliott, it was the genuine hospitality of area residents that sold them on their Biltmore Park Town Square condominium. “The people here are so welcoming,” says Kay. “Whether you’re from here or not, you’re accepted.”

Don and Kay split their time between Texas and Asheville (they own Chevrolet dealerships in both states). They purchased Sunshine Chevrolet in Fletcher two years ago and its nearness to their new condominium makes Don’s commute a breeze.

The constant activity in Biltmore Park Town Square is something they both fully enjoy. “We also have a cabin here in the mountains, but this area is so much more vibrant,” says Don. “Just last night there were tons of people milling around. We love walking to dinner, and the YMCA is great.”

Their 1,200-square-foot home fits their lifestyle. The compact space offers an open layout with such architectural details as decorative crown molding, arched doorways, granite counters in the kitchen and baths, and large windows offering great views of the activity below.

The unit came mostly furnished, but Kay soon discovered Design Avenue Home Furnishings in the Airport Design Center and, working with owner Jackie Teague, brought in wonderfully crafted pieces for the living room. Two overstuffed chairs with red and tan strips and a rich red paisley bring color and personality to the warm beiges and taupe trim. The kitchen opens to the living room and has a small dining area framed out on either side by the bank of windows. The natural light visually enlarges the space and highlights the honey finish of the cabinets and the light flecks in the counters.

In the master bedroom, just off the entry, Kay has used a modern color combination of silver, black, and beige with turquoise accents in the bedding and decorative pieces. A small, but elegant master bath completes the space. A guest room—with a silver and gold spread covering the sleigh bed—offers the perfect space for overnight guests including their daughter and Kay’s best friend from college. Matching side tables host silver lamps and three sunburst clocks add interest above the bed.
