Bullington Gardens’ Dahlia Daze Includes a Photo Contest

The American Dahlia Society’s 50th National Dahlia Show will be September 15–19 at the Crowne Plaza Resort. Following this event, Bullington Gardens in Hendersonville is holding a celebration titled Dahlia Daze, from September 20–23. During this time, guests are invited to attend garden tours and watch an ikebana flower arranging demonstration at no charge. The Daze culminates in an event called “Daze of Wine and Dahlias” on Friday, September 23.

As part of Dahlia Daze, Bullington is sponsoring a photo contest for amateur photographers. The public is invited to submit up to two photos per person no later than September 14 that are five-by-seven inches in size. No digital submissions will be accepted.

There will be two categories (adult and 18 and under) with a $100 prize, sponsored by Blue Spiral I gallery. The judge will be Dana Moore, a noted photographer and former program director for Penland School of Crafts. Winners will be announced on September 23.

That day, from 6–8 p.m., there will be a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception in the dahlia garden at Bullington. Registration is required and tickets are $20 per person ($100 for patrons—who will receive a vase of dahlias—$80 of which will be tax deductible).

Volunteer Mignon Durham says everyone is invited to visit Bullington Gardens free of charge, adding, “Photographers will have over 650 plants to photograph! The dahlias will be in their full glory (starting) in mid- August…Don’t come now, as the flowers are just budding.”

Mail photo entries (and the registration fee for the event on September 23) to Bullington Gardens, 95 Upper Red Oak Trail, Hendersonville). Photos submitted to the contest become the property of Bullington Gardens and will not be returned. For more information, visit bullingtongardens.org.
