Asheville Playback Theatre: Reinvented (Again!)
Post Date: 09.01.2010
Improvisation is flying without a net, knowing that every show will be different. In improv theatre, performers must reinvent themselves countless times in one evening. This is the essence of Asheville Playback Theatre (APT) which starts this new season this month.
“People ask us all the time, ‘How do you rehearse improvisational theatre?’” says Deborah Scott, APT’s artistic director. “In a show we act out stories shared by the audience, so that is how we practice - with our own stories.” The result is a tight ensemble of players who know a whole lot about each other, and have the trust needed to work together on that high wire.
This year marks the 16th APT has been performing in the area, and the company is still reinventing them- selves, as they do so well on stage. This year there are new venues, new community partnerships, new players, and the mentoring of a new company in Durham. The company will continue to offer its popular free monthly Third Saturday Open Playshop, and public performances regularly.
We love the two theatres that have been home to Playback,” says Raphael Peter, the company’s managing director. “You will still find us at the Bebe Theatre and NC Stage this season, but we are excited to announce that in 2011 we will also appear at the Asheville Masonic Temple on Broadway. That’s right—Asheville Playback Theatre has made it to Broadway!”
The season’s first performance will be at 8 P.M. on Friday, September 17, at the BeBe Theatre. For a complete performance schedule and information about what the company offers, visit ashevilleplayback.org.
