The Magnetic Theatre presents IN THE ASSASSINS’ GARDEN by David Brendan Hopes

June 15 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

It’s 1901. A deeply divided America, like the rest of the globe, is teetering on the brink of war. Politicians are manipulating the facts to curry public favor, and the media is spinning the public into a partisan-fueled frenzy, as our country is deciding its moral and philosophical destiny.

Sound familiar? We think so, too. Even though it’s set at the turn of the 20th century, In the Assassins’ Garden feels as relevant and vital as the morning news. Asheville-area playwright David Brendan Hopes examines our country’s values with ferocity and abandon, bringing new dimension to familiar icons such as Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, news publisher William Randolph Hearst, and feminist/political activist Emma Goldman. The play examines an important moment in historical time, and, in doing so, asks very modern questions about the nature of government, rights, freedom, and even the idea of country itself.

In the Assassins’ Garden is smoldering historical look at an America riven by partisan politics, flirting with socialism, and galvanized by a swiftly rising feminist movement. Seemingly contemporary, this historical play looks at the chaotic and frenzied era of the assassination of William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States.

IN THE ASSASSINS’ GARDEN runs June 14th – 30th at The Magnetic Theatre, located at 375 Depot Street in the River Arts District. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm. Tickets are $20 for General Admission and $10 for students. All tickets are subject to a $3 ticketing fee. For more information, please visit
