The Magnetic Theatre proudly presents INDECENT by Paula Vogel, A North Carolina Premiere

August 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Magnetic Theatre Company is proud to present the regional premiere of Paula Vogel’s Tony Award-nominated play, Indecent, with performances running August 2 – August 25, 2019 at the theatre’s intimate venue in the heart of Asheville’s River Arts District. For tickets, go to, or call 828-239-9250.
In Indecent, an ensemble of 10 actors and musicians follow the trajectory of Sholem Asch’s controversial play God of Vengeance, the first play by a Jewish playwright to open on Broadway. Asch’s play, which sketches out a budding romance between two young women, featuring a luminous scene of them dancing in an onstage rain, is a hit in Europe. But when it arrives in America, on Broadway, in 1923, the entire cast is arrested for obscenity. Writing from varied points of view and with a lot of humor, Ms. Vogel relates the impact this revolutionary play has on its stage manager, Lemml (Asheville actor Daniel Sandoval), acting troupe, and the audiences who witness it.
In addition to Mr. Sandoval, actors playing multiple roles are Asheville area actors Doug Savitt, Mary Katherine O’Donnell, Lara Holloway, Stan Baranowski, and Daniel Moore. Asheville director, and Magnetic Theatre’s co-Artistic Director, Andrew Gall, directs. Ginger Haselden, a veteran area music director, will bring the play’s score of original and historic songs together with an ensemble of live musicians.
Playwright Paula Vogel developed this play alongside director Rebecca Taichman, blending actual text from the original God of Vengeance script, trial manuscripts, and letters to create this haunting and beautiful story. The play had a critically acclaimed Broadway run following its World-Premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre. The Magnetic Theatre is presenting the first production of the play in the region.
