SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Just Brew It
DESCRIPTION:Just Economics is thrilled to announce the 14 year anniversary return of its annual home brewers competition and fundraising event\, Just Brew It. Set to take place on June 1st\, at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain\, Just Brew It promises an afternoon of exceptional craft beer\, community camaraderie\, and support for Just Economics’ impactful initiatives. \nJust Brew It has become a staple event around Asheville\, fondly known as “beer city” for its vibrant brewery scene. However\, beyond the hops and malts\, this event holds a deeper significance. Just Economics focuses on crucial issues like living wages\, affordable housing—a hugely significant topic of local conversation\, and public transit access\, making Just Brew It not just a celebration of beer but a platform for positive change. \nWhat makes Just Brew It stand out? Attendees consistently rave about the surprising creativity and quality of the brews\, showcasing the unparalleled artistry and experimentation of homebrewers. The economic reality is that commercial brewers can’t afford to be as experimental or exotic in their ingredients as homebrewers who enjoy the luxury of embracing a more artisan approach to the brewing craft. With over 50 unique beers created by 20+ talented individuals\, from classic IPAs to innovative concoctions featuring coffee\, chocolate\, spices\, and fruit\, there’s something to delight every beer enthusiast’s palate. \nBut it’s not just about the beer. Just Brew It welcomes all members of the community\, offering a selection of non-alcoholic drinks for those seeking a different kind of refreshment. Plus\, the event is not just a fundraiser but an opportunity to engage with Just Economics’ mission firsthand. \nHow can you be part of Just Brew It 2024? This event is not ticketed\, so simply become a 2024 individual member of Just Economics and gain access to the event\, where you can vote for your favorite brews. Upgrade to a VIP Membership for exclusive perks like early entry\, a VIP swag bag with a souvenir glass\, and more. \nJoin us on June 1st at Pisgah Brewing for Just Brew It 2024—where great beer meets community impact!
