SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

DESCRIPTION:Every Friday Modelface Comedy brings you the best comedians from all over the country. This week we bring you Louis Katz from NYC! \nLouis Katz performs punchline heavy\, New York-style stand up with an understated intellectual edge that’s been lovingly described as “cerebral filth.” Over the course of his career\, Louis’ stand up has been featured on NBC\, HBO\, and 5 times on Comedy Central\, including his own half-hour special and an appearance on their storytelling show\, “This Is Not Happening\,” which has since been viewed over 2.9 million times on YouTube. His latest album\, “KATZKILLS\,” was named one of the top 5 comedy albums of the year by vulture.com\, who called it “a raucous comedy party.” Louis’ first one-hour special was released on Epix in 2022 as part of their “Unprotected Sets” series. His latest special\, “Present/Tense\,” was released independently on YouTube in late 2023 and became an instant hit with nearly a million views in less than 3 months. \nA true comedian’s comedian\, Louis’ act has garnered praise from industry legends such as Dave Attell who called him\, “one of the best joke writers working today” and Ali Wong who said Louis was\, “one of the funniest and most prolific comedians I know.” Marc Maron featured Louis on his WTF podcast twice\, saying\, “His album and special are hilarious.” But perhaps Doug Stanhope put it best when he said\, “Katz is funny to the point that Hitler would have given him a sleeper car on the train.” \nIf you like your dirty jokes smart and your smart jokes a little filthy\, Louis’ act is not to be missed. \nages 18+ \nEarly show doors at 6:30\, show at 7pm\nLate show doors at 8:45\, show at 9:15 \nTickets $18 GA\, $23 premium seating* \n*premium seating is table seating in the front three rows
