SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:FILM SCREENING: Deep Listening: The Story of Pauline Oliveros
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Deep Listening\, a new documentary film project on the life and work of American icon Pauline Oliveros. \nPauline Oliveros (1932-2016) composer\, performer\, humanitarian\, was an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally\, for six decades she explored sound-forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation\, electronic music\, ritual\, teaching and meditation she created a body of work with such a breadth of vision that it profoundly effects those who experience it and eludes many who try to write about it. \nOliveros was honored with many awards\, including four honorary doctorates\, grants and concerts internationally. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Centre in Washington DC\, in an underground Cistern\, or in the studios of a West German radio station\, Oliveros’ commitment to interaction with the moment was unchanged. Through Deep Listening Pieces and earlier Sonic Meditations\, Oliveros introduced the concept of incorporating all environmental sounds into musical performance. She spoke of this as “playing the space\,” playing with whatever space she performed in as another instrument. As she said\, “Listening to space changes the space\, and changing the space changes listening.” In playing this way\, she applied focused concentration\, skilled musicianship\, and strong improvisational skills\, all of which were hallmarks of her performances. \nShe built a loyal following through her extensive teaching\, concerts\, recordings\, publications\, and musical compositions that she wrote for soloists and ensembles in music\, dance\, theater\, and inter-arts companies. She also provided leadership within the music community by acting in an advisory capacity for organizations such as The National Endowment for the Arts\, New York State Council for the Arts\, and many private foundations. She served as Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Darius Milhaud Composer in Residence at Mills College. \nOliveros was vocal about representing the needs of individual artists\, about the need for diversity and experimentation in the arts and promoting cooperation and good will among people. She founded the Deep Listening Institute\, formerly Pauline Oliveros Foundation\, and now Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n“Deep Listening is listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life\, of nature\, or one’s own thoughts as well as musical sounds. Deep Listening represents a heightened state of awareness and connects to all that there is. As a composer I make my music through Deep Listening.”\n– Pauline Oliveros

SUMMARY:Suzie Brown + Scot Sax
DESCRIPTION:Suzie Brown and Scot Sax return to the Citizen Vinyl stage on July 11. 7 p.m. show\, 6 p.m. doors. $18 in advance / $22 at the door. \nA 1970s-inspired folk-pop songwriter\, Suzie Brown has chased her unique muse for a decade\, making modern-day roots music that nods to the soul singers\, heartland rockers\, and blues artists who came before her. Gluing the sound together is the unforced voice and honest\, autobiographical songwriting of a Renaissance woman who’s not only an acclaimed musician\, but also a part-time cardiologist and full-time mother. \nScot Sax’s multifaceted career started with a bang when his song “I Walked” became a radio hit with his band Wanderlust (RCA) in ’95. It was the No. 1 most requested song on rock stations across the country. That year ended with Wanderlust opening for The Who. After signing a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music in Los Angeles\, Sax went on to write and perform “I Am The Summertime” for the film American Pie (awarded a Gold Record) and form indie-darlings FEEL (Curb Records). In 2005\, he was a co-writer of the Grammy-winning Faith Hill/Tim McGraw duet “Like We Never Loved At All.” Upon hearing Sax’s song “What Gets In The Way\,” Robert Plant\, Alison Krauss\, and T-Bone Burnett asked him and singer Sharon Little to be their opening act for their Raising Sand Tour in 2007. Sax worked with Don Was in 2009 on Little’s second album. From there\, Sax went on to dive into another passion of his: film. He released the documentary Platinum Rush\, starring Lisa Loeb and Oliver Wood\, created videos for Lucinda Williams’ Car Wheels On A Gravel Road 20th Anniversary Tour\, and directed award-winning films Playback Is A Bitch and This Is Major\, all the while continuing to release new music. Since 2023\, Scot’s comedy and music TV show “JoinWithVideo” has been seen on CBS in Nashville and has become an East Nashville staple.
