SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:Lakisha Blount: When We See Us
DESCRIPTION:Tyger Tyger Gallery is delighted to announce its upcoming solo exhibition\, When We See Us\, featuring the bright\, bold and vibrant artwork of local artist Lakisha Blount. Born in the historic Black community of Texana\, North Carolina\, Blount honors the essence of her experiences and generational stories of Black mountain life in Appalachia through her figurative oil paintings. Many of the artist’s subjects are representative of her deep sense of memory and connection to real people in her life\, like the matriarchs of her family. Some works are of no particular person – instead\, Blount captures her own version of Black mountain men. Narrative content is woven throughout her work\, with subjects that harken moments of daily life such as Sunday Tag\, depicting two little girls playing tag after church\, or Fontana Rising\, a vision of the significant creation and destruction of a town through a dream lens. \nDense with skins of oil paint built up to create gritty ridges and marks\, the artist’s canvases speak through layers of their own history as she shape-shifts her subjects and their environments\, often working deep into the night. Pointing to a work in progress featuring a portrait in silhouette during a recent studio visit with Mira Gerard\, owner and director of Tyger Tyger Gallery\, Blount explained: “She’s a self-portrait– for now\, at least. That may change as I work on her more.” She is working within the long tradition of painters whose work is encountered as it is made\, through a process that involves paying careful attention to what the painting is telling her rather than asserting directorial control. \nLakisha Blount’s work imagines\, positions\, memorializes\, and asserts African diasporic experiences by highlighting and celebrating the voices and narratives of Black and brown individuals as they see themselves. In the artist’s own words\, “I want to create a space where Black stories are not just told\, but celebrated and preserved. It’s about creating visibility\, fostering a sense of belonging\, and ensuring that our narratives are seen and valued in the world.” \nThe opening reception for When We See Us will be held on the evening of July 12th\, 2024 from 6-8 pm. The artist\, Lakisha Blount\, will be in attendance\, as well as the curator of the exhibition\, Tyger Tyger owner and artist Mira Gerard. Light refreshments will be served. A subsequent artist talk at the gallery will be held on Thursday\, August 8th\, from 6-8pm\, while the exhibition is on view. \nContact or follow Tyger Tyger Gallery for more information on upcoming exhibitions and events.
