SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Randy Shull: Black & White"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery hours are Wed – Sat 11am-5pm \nTracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Black & White\, an exhibition of new large-scale\, abstract work by artist Randy Shull. This is Shull’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. An opening reception for the Artist is scheduled for Friday\, August 9 from 6-8PM.\n \nShull has the unique ability to evoke both gravity and weightlessness within a single artwork\, pouring thick layers of paint around the loose weave of handmade hammocks\, a material that he has been incorporating in his work for several years. Hammocks are core to life in the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico where Shull has lived part-time for the past 18 years\, and where he maintains a studio in the historic center of Mérida. If art and hammocks are the vehicles of dreams\, Shull’s work carves a path into the subconscious. \nAs objects\, hammocks are extremely strong and malleable\, with a rich cultural history. Shull at once honors this craft and lineage while treating it irreverently\, exploring the boundaries of what a painting can be with tireless experimentation. In these heavily textured almost muscular works\, Shull subverts the very notion of a painting\, reversing the usual role of canvas and paint. Using paint as a binder to hold the hammocks together\, he creates a radical new material that is culled from the histories of art and craft while decidedly pointing towards their futures. \nThe natural sagging and draping that occurs in these works lends a tapestry-like aesthetic\, and upon looking we become suddenly viscerally aware of the weight of our bodies. Simultaneously\, Shull’s use of vibrant colors\, earth tones\, and rough surfaces and edges allows us to revel in the simple pleasures of materiality and light. \nThe title of the exhibition is in part a nod toward contemporary life in the polarized U.S. and is in line with Shull’s interest in pairs\, contrasts\, and the spaces between; many of the works on view are subtly divided into two panels. \nIn addition to paintings\, the exhibition will include some sculptural and video elements that illustrate Shull’s investigation\, in the extreme\, of the capacity and capability of the hammock. \nRandy Shull lives and works in Asheville\, NC and Mérida\, Mexico. He received his BFA in Furniture Design from Rochester Institute of Technology\, NY in 1986. He is the recipient of a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship and a NEA Southern Arts Federation grant. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum\, NY; The High Museum of Art\, GA; The Renwick Museum of American Art\, Washington\, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft + Design\, NC; Racine Museum of Art\, WI; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design\, NC; Museum of Art and Design\, NY\, Black Mountain College Museum\, NC; The Asheville Art Museum\, NC; The Ogden Museum of Southern Art\, LA; The Mobile Museum of Art\, AL\, and numerous corporate collections including Fidelity\, Wells Fargo\, Piedmont Natural Gas\, Duke Hospital\, and Wortham Center for the Performing Arts\, among others.
