DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Exhibition themes will correspond to the chapters of co-curator David Silver’s book on this topic\, to be published in conjunction with the exhibition in partnership with Atelier Editions.  \nCurated by David Silver and Bruce Johansen

Give your yards and gardens a little local love with our Fall ONLINE Native Shrub & Plant Sale (with pick-ups in Asheville\, NC). Choose from several native perennial species and shrubs\, including azaleas\, ornamental native plants\, pollinator species\, and those particularly beneficial to wildlife. All plants are sourced locally from Carolina Native Nursery. We anticipate some items selling out quickly so don’t wait to place your order! \nOrders will be accepted online from October 1-31st\, while supplies last. You must pay for the order at the time you submit it in order to secure your species and size of choice. Then\, pick up your order in Asheville\, NC on Tuesday\, November 19th from 3-6 pm. Pick-up location coming soon.\n**MUST pick up on Nov. 19th unless prior arrangements have been made by emailing amy@mountaintrue.org. Early pick-up is not available. Items will not be delivered until the morning of Nov. 19th. They help prevent erosion\, filter pollution from runoff\, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. MountainTrue staff and volunteers spend significant time and resources removing nonnative invasive plants along streams and lake shorelines to protect water quality and ensure that the native vegetation stays healthy.  \n**Please note: several of these plants and shrubs may be “dormant” or cut back. This is normal and not a cause for concern. DESCRIPTION:Friends\, it is time once again for Asheville’s most fantastical festival of freakiness and fun… The Surreal Sirkus Arts Festival! As always\, this is a FREE community event\, brought to you by Arts 2 People\, the organization that put on LAAFF for 15 years downtown.\nThis year’s festival will be bigger than ever with three music stages\, a community storytelling tent\, dozens of art vendors\, food\, beer and other libations\, and of course\, the highlight of the evening: the sunset performance by Surreal Sirkus.\nThe main stage at the Amphitheater in front of City Hall will feature live bands and musicians from Asheville and beyond. It will culminate in the Surreal Sirkus Main Show at 7:30 pm\, which will showcase an array of performers\, including aerialists\, fire spinners\, puppeteers\, jugglers\, dancers\, and other circus acts.\nThis year’s show tells the story of one man’s journey after death\, and the beings he encounters along the way. Unifire Theater\, Street Creature Puppets\, and many other local performance groups will take part in the show.\nAlso\, this year\, Arts 2 People has partnered with Create Fest\, a local organization bringing diverse communities together through the arts. They will host an Open Mic & Showcase on the Reuter Terrace\, from noon until 7 p.m. The terrace will also be home to a number of interactive exhibits and spaces for audience participation.\nMeanwhile\, at North Pack Square\, there will be two more performance areas: an EDM stage on the raised lawn featuring some of Asheville’s finest DJ’s\, and a Storytelling Tent located on the site of the former Vance Monument.\nThe latter is intended as a space for folks from around the region to share their personal stories as a way of bringing the community together in a spirit of healing and greater understanding of each other.
