DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Exhibition themes will correspond to the chapters of co-curator David Silver’s book on this topic\, to be published in conjunction with the exhibition in partnership with Atelier Editions.  \nCurated by David Silver and Bruce Johansen

DESCRIPTION:GRATITUDE AND CONNECTION! \nThe invitation is to move  your Gratitude and Connection to all people\, family members or loved ones in our different communities! \nAs we approach our Thanksgiving Holiday\, we have so much to be grateful for.  The aftermath of Hurricane Helene was devastating and emotional for us all.  Throughout our difficulties connections to our different communities remain strong! It is important to give a hug\, prepare food\, donate to those in need\,  offer showers to those who have no clean water\, help clean up efforts of devastated areas around town.  We need that support to feel love from others and  connected to our communities!  Take some time to show appreciation to everyone in our surrounding communities! \nAbout 5Rhythms®\nCreated by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide. 5Rhythms® is a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principles that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. \nAbout Karen:\n5Rhythms dance is for everyone. This meditative instructional dance practice which is  created by dancer and visionary Gabriellle Roth. Accredited 5Rhythms teacher Karen Chapman has been hosting dances in Asheville and around the country for 8 years.  Through the dance\, Karen acts as an instructional movement leader for the dancer to have a journey through the rhythms\, based on how does the body move and change through this fast paced world? \nTime: 10am-12pm\nFee: $15-25\, no one turned away\nThis movement class will be held once a month upon a scheduled date. \nMovement Timeline:\nWarmup: 10am-10:30am\nCircle: 10:30am-10:45am\, invitation for movement\, demo the 5Rhythms\, answer any questions that may arise\nMovement: 10:45 am- 12pm\, we will move to the Wave music and I will provide instructional exercises throughout our movement session.\nSound Healing Session: 11:30-12:00 noon given by Erika Bear Banwell\nClosing Circle: 12:00-12:05 we will gather in our closing circle to make closure for our class.   \nSound Healer: Erika Bear Banwell\nErika “Bear” Banwell began performing Therapeutic Vibrational Sound Baths after receiving a healing treatment in Bali\, Indonesia in 2020. Not only did her experience open her eyes to the incredible emotional and mental benefits of sound vibration but she discovered that the tonal power of the gong would greatly hasten the recovery of her recent shoulder injury.\nNow\, one of her greatest passions\, Sound Therapy\, along with Chakra Meditation Breathwork\, is helping so many find direction\, self-compassion and inner strength as well as better sleep\, relaxation and peace of mind. Bear is also a Massage Therapist\, Reiki Practitioner\, Trust Technique Practitioner and Intuitive. She works with animals as well and human. \nThis class counts for 2hrs of Waves credit for classes! \nLook forward to moving with you all soon! Love K

SUMMARY:Defying Gravity; A Celebration of Women in Musical Theater
DESCRIPTION:The 4SCO is pleased to present a dazzling program titled “Defying Gravity; A Celebration of Women in Musical Theater.” The concert features an excursion down Broadway\, celebrating women in musical theater. This uplifting program includes music from popular musicals; Chicago\, Frozen\, Legally Blonde\, and Wicked. The musicals featured highlight women who break barriers\, challenge the status quo\, and engage in the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Attendees will enjoy the familiarity\, inspiration\, and thematic components of each selection. Additionally\, emotive opera and aria compositions by Henry Purcell\, and Elfrida Andrée are featured. Kathleen Watson and Candice Dickinson are the featured soloists.
