DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

The organization invites eight local valley schools/programs to have their art teachers select works to be featured in at BMCA. Artists range from kindergarten to high school students. This show gives them an opportunity to showcase their talents in a real gallery setting. SUMMARY:The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Holden Gallery’s exhibition The Wondrous World Of Hobey Ford’s Golden Rod Puppets featuring the work of master puppeteer Hobey Ford will be on view at Warren Wilson College from January 23rd to March 7th\, 2025.  \nWarren Wilson’s Art Department is excited to host an exhibition of rod\, foam\, and shadow puppets by the award winning puppeteer\, Hobey Ford. On display will be characters\, stories and set pieces from a range of tales from Ford’s previous shows including a few puppets from friend and mentor Clyde Hollifield. This exhibition will explore how puppetry can engage the imagination of audiences of all ages\, while sharing the process of puppet construction and showcasing Ford’s contributions to the craft.  \nWinner of the UNIMA Citation for Excellence and 3 Jim Henson Foundation grants\, Hobey Ford is known for his excellence in puppetry performance and craft and his skill as a master storyteller. Hobey utilizes his artistic studies from the State University of New York and UNCA to design and construct all of his Golden Rod puppets. His performances present puppetry styles and tales from around the world and feature puppetry styles he has created such as the Peepers hand puppets and his well-loved “Foamies” puppets made from large blocks of foam with inventive mechanisms to create life-like movements. Hobey tours internationally and trains teachers through his involvement with the Kennedy Center of the Northwest Film Forum.  \nThe exhibition opening reception is on January 23rd  from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.  The Elizabeth Holden Gallery is open M-F\, 10- 4pm and Saturdays 1-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents the Yarn/Wire quartet\, performing compositions by Annea Lockwood and Katherine Young. \nThe Yarn/Wire ensemble will perform the second realization of their Fromm Foundation-supported project in collaboration with composer Katherine Young\, entitled BIOMES 6.1. They will also perform the music of Annea Lockwood\, a legendary composer\, sound artist\, and acoustic ecologist and member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, who is renowned for her focus on the effects of sound in our environments. \n——–\nDescribed by The New York Times as “key figures from the contemporary music scene… with unmistakable devotion and excitement\,” Yarn/Wire is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet (Sae Hashimoto and Russell Greenberg\, percussion; Laura Barger and Julia Den Boer\, pianos) dedicated to the promotion of creative\, experimental new music. \nSince its formation in 2005\, the ensemble has become a fixture at the world’s preeminent halls and music festivals\, making its German debut in two concerts at the prestigious Donaueschingen Musiktage in 2023. Yarn/Wire’s 2023-24 season includes a residency at IRCAM; performances at the Eclat Festival and Monday Evening Concerts; an appearance at the Bergen International Festival with JACK Quartet; Øyvind Torvund’s The Sound of the Forest at the Ultima Festival in Norway; as well as several high profile NYC performances. Yarn/Wire holds educational and performance residencies this season at Emory University\, Georgia Tech\, and UC Berkeley. \nTheir ongoing commissioning series\, Yarn/Wire/Currents\, serves as an incubator for new experimental music in partnership with a variety of Brooklyn-based institutions.
