SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Director: Victoria Lamberth \nApproximate Run Time: 2 hours\, 5 minutes\nRating: PG-13 due to adult language and situations. Conversations addressing prejudice\, racism\, and bigotry. \nA progressive white couple’s proud liberal sensibilities are tested when their daughter brings her black fiance home to meet them in this fresh and relevant stage adaptation of the iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Blindsided by their daughter’s whirlwind romance and fearful for her future\, Matt and Christina Drayton quickly realize the difference between supporting a mixed-race couple in your newspaper and welcoming one into your family–especially in 1967.
