SUMMARY:Our Living Record at Revolve Gallery
DESCRIPTION:A multimedia exhibit honoring queer and trans archives\, memory\, and resistance \nAsheville\, NC – Our Living Record\, a new exhibition from Southern Equality Studios – – the art program of The Campaign for Southern Equality\, on view starting July 10 through August 17\, 2025 at Revolve Gallery (821 Riverside Dr. Asheville\, NC 28801). This vibrant and deeply personal show features artwork from Southern LGBTQ+ community members and allies who explore preserving queer memory in the face of cultural erasure. \nThe exhibition includes photography\, sculpture\, projection\, ephemera\, and participatory archival interactive installations. Each piece reflects how personal objects\, imagery\, and memories connect to the broader story of LGBTQ+ resilience\, resistance\, and joy. \n“Queer and trans histories are often fragmented or excluded from dominant narratives\,” says curator Liz Williams. “Our Living Record asks: what happens when we tell our stories ourselves—through our photos\, our letters\, our zines\, our everyday rituals? This exhibition is a gathering of those fragments. A way to say: we were here\, we are here and we will sustain and remain.” \nFeatured artists include:\nLenny Kyriakoulis\, Kass Patterson \, Daniel Simone\, Crain Cutler\, Eduardo Moraes de Oliveira Barbosa\, Amanda Simons\, Lindsay Jones\, and Jeannie Regan \nThe exhibition also includes community-sourced materials\, family snapshots\, protest signs\, and objects from queer everyday life. An Archival Activation Event will take place on July 30\, featuring storytelling\, readings\, an interactive archive activation for WNC LGBTQIA+ Archive Project. \nArtists and community members were asked to submit personal photos\, letters\, or historical ephemera that could be projected onto them during their portrait session—creating an image that literally places history on the body. Each participant also sat for a filmed interview sharing why their items matter\, what stories need to be preserved\, and what message they want to pass on to future generations. \nOur Living Record is supported by Southern Equality Studios\, a project of the Campaign for Southern Equality. Revolve Gallery is located at 821 Riverside Drive #179 in Asheville’s River Arts District. Admission is free and open to the public during gallery hours. \nFor interviews\, press images\, or event information\, please contact Liz Williams at liz@southernequality.org.

SUMMARY:Elements of BMC: Intuitive Photography and Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ELEMENTS OF BMC is a workshop series that explores the fundamental parts of creative practice at Black Mountain College\, highlighting a range of artistic mediums and techniques. The series investigates the role of these elements in shaping the college’s legacy and lasting influence on contemporary art. Join us for an intuitive photography and collage workshop with Anna Helgeson. Please register if you plan to attend. \nAbout the Workshop:\nWe are all haunted; by ideas\, history\, ancestors (biological and otherwise)\, and by animating forces we can not quite explain. This workshop will welcome the possibility of collaborating with these mysterious forces. \nParticipants will be led through a guided meditation (which is nothing to be afraid of) before going on an intuitive photo walk around downtown Asheville. We will then return to BMC Museum + Art Center to create collages based on the photographic discoveries collected. There is no right or wrong way to engage with this workshop\, unless you allow ideas of right and wrong to control your actions\, which would clearly be wrong. \nNo photography experience necessary. Any image capturing device will work\, including your phone\, a point and shoot camera\, a fancy DSLR.

SUMMARY:Five Spice - A Talk Show 五味人生
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of heartfelt connection and creative exchange as Shunyu Huang\, former Story Parlor Artist-in-Residence\, invites a guest from Asheville’s BIPOC community—who\, in turn\, brings a friend of their own—to the table. \nThe first half of the evening is a relaxed roundtable conversation where the trio\, over a shared pot of tea\, explores the “five flavors of life”—sourness\, sweetness\, bitterness\, saltiness\, and spiciness. Through curious and thoughtful questions\, they uncover the common threads that connect us all. \nIn the second half\, the guest artists take to the stage for a collaborative performance weaving together elements from the full evening. \nThis intimate and dynamic event continues the work of Shunyu’s residency\, Memory Quilt\, celebrating connection\, creativity\, and the rich tapestry of our shared humanity.
