SUMMARY:Our Living Record at Revolve Gallery
DESCRIPTION:A multimedia exhibit honoring queer and trans archives\, memory\, and resistance \nAsheville\, NC – Our Living Record\, a new exhibition from Southern Equality Studios – – the art program of The Campaign for Southern Equality\, on view starting July 10 through August 17\, 2025 at Revolve Gallery (821 Riverside Dr. Asheville\, NC 28801). This vibrant and deeply personal show features artwork from Southern LGBTQ+ community members and allies who explore preserving queer memory in the face of cultural erasure. \nThe exhibition includes photography\, sculpture\, projection\, ephemera\, and participatory archival interactive installations. Each piece reflects how personal objects\, imagery\, and memories connect to the broader story of LGBTQ+ resilience\, resistance\, and joy. \n“Queer and trans histories are often fragmented or excluded from dominant narratives\,” says curator Liz Williams. “Our Living Record asks: what happens when we tell our stories ourselves—through our photos\, our letters\, our zines\, our everyday rituals? This exhibition is a gathering of those fragments. A way to say: we were here\, we are here and we will sustain and remain.” \nFeatured artists include:\nLenny Kyriakoulis\, Kass Patterson \, Daniel Simone\, Crain Cutler\, Eduardo Moraes de Oliveira Barbosa\, Amanda Simons\, Lindsay Jones\, and Jeannie Regan \nThe exhibition also includes community-sourced materials\, family snapshots\, protest signs\, and objects from queer everyday life. An Archival Activation Event will take place on July 30\, featuring storytelling\, readings\, an interactive archive activation for WNC LGBTQIA+ Archive Project. \nArtists and community members were asked to submit personal photos\, letters\, or historical ephemera that could be projected onto them during their portrait session—creating an image that literally places history on the body. Each participant also sat for a filmed interview sharing why their items matter\, what stories need to be preserved\, and what message they want to pass on to future generations. \nOur Living Record is supported by Southern Equality Studios\, a project of the Campaign for Southern Equality. Revolve Gallery is located at 821 Riverside Drive #179 in Asheville’s River Arts District. Admission is free and open to the public during gallery hours. \nFor interviews\, press images\, or event information\, please contact Liz Williams at liz@southernequality.org.

SUMMARY:Bindings Art Exhibit with Randy Siegel at North Asheville Library
DESCRIPTION:Scraps of fabric\, rope\, string\, wire\, and thread\, along with obsessive stitching and often beading\, obscure and obstruct hidden aspects of self often too painful to acknowledge and to beautiful to ignore. With each wrap\, knot\, and stitch\, the creative process has been a mediation and ritual—a holy sacrament of confession\, absolution\, and integration as shadow aspects of self are brought to light\, acceptance\, and love.

SUMMARY:Bark Mask Making w/ Josh Barnwell
DESCRIPTION:In preparation for Autumn and Samhain\, the season of ancestors and mystery\, this hands-on exploration of the nature of bark–and your own wild nature–is the perfect opportunity to create an alternate visage for yourself. Bark is a material of incredible richness\, its textures\, forms and functions shaped by the trees it protects. Beyond its practical uses\, bark has a deeper\, more mysterious potential: transformational masks. For centuries\, humans have metamorphosed through masks\, exploring alter selves and new ways of seeing the world.\nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll do just that: explore the nature of bark and your own creative instincts by crafting a unique mask from tulip poplar bark. \nWhat You’ll Learn & Create:\n* How bark behaves from tree to transformation—its natural properties\, preparation\, and preservation.\n*The process of selecting and shaping bark into a mask\, designing a form that speaks to you.\n*Basic low-relief carving techniques using simple hand tools (experience is helpful but not required).\n*How to process your own bark into mask blanks for future creations. \nEach participant will leave with a handmade mask and the skills to continue crafting with bark. But more than that\, this workshop offers a chance to connect—both with the living trees that provide this material and with the internal landscapes we explore when we create and embody an alternate version of ourselves.\nWhether you’re a seasoned carver or a curious beginner\, this class invites you to step into the world of bark mask making—an art both ancient and newly rediscovered. Join beloved crafter and inspiring instructor\, Josh Barnwell\, in shaping something truly unique.
