SUMMARY:Craft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft
DESCRIPTION:The word craft-itarianism was coined by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez to name artistic projects that generate employment\, raise awareness\, or offer therapeutic support through craft. These programs provide a space where people affected by addiction\, incarceration\, and gun violence can find solidarity while learning a skill. \nCraft-itarianism: Community Action Through Craft celebrates nonprofits and artists who believe in—and actively practice—the power of craft to support and empower individuals and communities. \nThis exhibition was curated by 2026 Center for Craft Curatorial Fellow Alyssa Velazquez. Launched in 2017\, the Curatorial Fellowship supports emerging curators exploring new ideas about craft with mentorship\, professional development\, and a $5\,000 honorarium to realize an exhibition. \nOn view February 27\, 2026–September 27\, 2026

SUMMARY:The Odd Couple - Flat Rock Playhouse - 8/28-9/19
DESCRIPTION:Pour a drink and duck for cover — domestic bliss is about to get messy. \nMeet Felix: impeccably pressed\, emotionally distressed\, and suddenly single. Meet Oscar: charmingly rumpled\, habitually late\, and blissfully allergic to coasters. When Felix moves in with his old pal Oscar after a marital meltdown\, neatness meets nonsense\, and the sparks fly. \nAshtrays overflow\, tempers flare\, and laughter fills the living room in Neil Simon’s effervescent comedy of friendship\, forgiveness\, and the fine art of driving each other crazy. \nThe Odd Couple is a classic cocktail of chaos and charm. Proof that opposites attract… so long as they don’t share a kitchen. \nEvent Times: 2:00 PM & 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:Evon Streetman: Reflections
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of vintage photographs by Evon Streetman. \nEvon Streetman is a seminal figure in Southern photography whose experimental approach helped define the trajectory of contemporary photo-based art in the region. Initially trained as a painter\, she was an early pioneer in incorporating painterly processes and handwork into her photographs. She embraces the materiality of the photographic surface through interventions such as hand-coloring\, airbrushing\, and the application of gold and silver leaf. Her images often blur the line between documentation and transformation\, evoking a sense of place that is both intimate and enigmatic. \nStreetman’s work emerged alongside a broader movement of artists who redefined photography as a fine art medium\, including Clarissa Sligh\, William Christenberry\, and Eugene Meatyard. Like her contemporaries\, Streetman’s work explores memory and place\, remaining deeply rooted in the Southern landscape. \nIn addition to her artistic practice\, Streetman was an impactful educator. She assisted in developing the photography curriculum at Florida State University and later founded the photography program at the Penland School of Craft. Her work remains a standard in the study of alternative photographic practices and the visual culture of the American South.

SUMMARY:GUIDED OPEN STUDIO - SEPTEMBER EDITION - WITH ANNE STRUTZ\, PSA\, IAPS-MC
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays from 10-3\nSeptember 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 \nJoin Anne in the studio for an open-format pastel class designed to deepen your skills in this richly expressive medium. Each session begins with a guided morning exercise exploring essential artistic principles and techniques that bring depth\, energy\, and confidence to your work. Bring your own reference materials to create a personalized studio experience. Pastels\, paper\, and sketching and underpainting supplies are provided\, with premium sanded paper available for purchase. You’re also welcome to bring your own pastels and discover which colors will best complement and expand your palette. \nClass size limited to 6 \nARTIST BIO: \nAnne Strutz\, PSA\, IAPS-MC\, is an artist in motion\, pushing boundaries by infusing movement and energy into her paintings. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has also written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. \nAnne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

SUMMARY:Spirited Improv September Night Time Playshop Series in Asheville
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT SPIRITED IMPROV \nSpirited Improv is a unique fusion of expressive arts\, spiritual practice\, and group play that helps you release fear\, trust the unknown\, and show up as your truest self. Through embodied improvisational play\, movement\, voice\, storytelling\, music\, and customery\, we create a living container where authenticity is welcomed and presence is practiced. Over time\, this shared experience fosters deep connection\, confidence\, and a felt sense of belonging. \nFacilitated by Jessica Chilton\, who brings over 20 years of improvisational performing arts experience and 16 years as an expressive arts therapist\, weaving creativity\, spirituality\, and presence into a safe\, transformative group experience. \nSpirited Improv is for those seeking a spiritual community grounded in lived experience\, where growth happens through relationship\, creativity\, and the courage to show up fully. As we transform individually through improv\, we strengthen the collective and contribute to a more compassionate world. \nWHAT PAST PARTICIPANTS ARE SAYING \n“Spirited Improv is authentic\, vulnerable and connective. It meets my need to deeply feel\, be seen and see others. On my first night I experienced such a profound healing experience after sharing what was on my heart. It was like a sound\, healing touch\, full moon energy bath that opened my heart. ” ~ Kate \n“Spirited Improv is a fun and little bit edgy way of interacting with the mystery of the moment. You decide how much you want to interact or observe from the audience so you never have to do anything you don’t want to do. It is an opportunity to let go of control and explore the spontaneity of life and creativity in a supportive\, safe environment..” ~ Kenyon\n“I got to play\, move my body\, laugh\, take joy in watching my friends come alive\, give and receive big hugs\, and feel the presence of the ancestors who always join me. There’s something so sacred about being present with others while we play\, witness and embody what is.” ~ Sue \nWHO IS THIS FOR \nPeople drawn to spirituality\, personal growth\, and inner exploration\nThose seeking genuine connection\, community\, and a sense of belonging\nCreatives and non-creatives alike – no improv or performance experience needed\nIndividuals who value compassion\, openness\, and radical acceptance\nPeople who want to grow in joyful\, embodied ways rather than through heavy or rigid processes\nThose who want to make a positive impact by starting with inner transformation\nIf you’re open\, curious\, and willing to show up as you are—you belong here. \nCURIOUS BUT NOT READY TO JOIN? \nJoin us for the very first playshop of our multi-week series and if you love your first playshop (and we think you will)\, then you’ll have the opportunity to register for the remainder of the series.
