SUMMARY:Mike Wiley Productions presents “Changing Same”
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: All performances will take place at the YMI Cultural Center at 39 S. Market St. Downtown Asheville* \nOn July 8\, 1944\, Private Booker T. Spicely boarded a bus in downtown Durham but never made it back to camp. The Black soldier\, newly stationed at a nearby Army base and unfamiliar with the South’s Jim Crow laws\, was shot twice in the chest by the bus driver after a dispute over his seat. The driver reboarded the bus and continued his route. An all-White jury later acquitted him in 28 minutes. \nAward-winning playwright and performer Mike Wiley brings Spicely\, the driver\, and a chorus of witnesses back to life in this searing solo show — excavating a story that faded from public memory in a city known for its progressive views\, visionary Black entrepreneurs\, and institutes of higher learning. \nJoin Mike Wiley for a Q&A following each performance. \nGeneral Admission Adult Tickets: $35\nStudent Tickets: $15 (18 and under/ college and graduate students with student ID)\nWednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays: 7:30pm ; Sundays: 2pm\n“Choose Your Price” Nights: Wednesdays & Thursdays (11/4-11/5 & 11/11-11/12)

SUMMARY:ABSTRACT PAINTING UNLEASHED - BOLD MARKS AND BRAVE LAYERS with Jodi Ohl
DESCRIPTION:If you’re drawn to abstract art with strong visual impact but struggle to create paintings that feel cohesive rather than chaotic\, this workshop is designed for you. \nDuring this two-day immersive studio experience\, you’ll learn the process Jodi uses to build dynamic abstract paintings filled with movement\, contrast\, texture\, and personality. Through a series of guided exercises\, demonstrations\, and hands-on experimentation\, you’ll develop original shapes\, marks\, and visual language that feel authentic to your own work. Together\, we’ll explore: \n– Creating strong compositions without relying on rigid formulas \n– Building layers that add depth\, history\, and interest \n– Using bold color\, graphic elements\, and contrast with intention \n– Developing confident mark-making that energizes a painting \n– Knowing when to push a piece further—and when to stop \nThis workshop is about learning how to make stronger decisions\, trust your instincts\, and discover new possibilities within your own creative process. \nOne of the greatest advantages of working in person is the opportunity to create alongside other artists. You’ll gain fresh perspectives\, learn through shared experiences\, and leave with new ideas that often emerge only when artists gather together. \n→ Artists can expect to complete one to two mid-sized abstract paintings incorporating texture\, collage\, and layered acrylic techniques. Each day begins with focused warm-up exercises and demonstrations that provide practical tools you can continue using long after the workshop ends. \nThis workshop is open to makers of all levels with some experience working in acrylics. If you would like to create bold\, contemporary abstract art that tells your story\, jump in and join us for Abstract Painting Unleashed!

SUMMARY:The Art of Presence: Meditation and Reflection in the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Step into the Museum’s galleries before the doors open for a quiet and contemplative morning of meditation\, mindful walking\, and reflection. This guided experience invites participants to slow down\, settle the nervous system\, and explore the Museum as a place of sanctuary\, spaciousness\, and renewal. \nThe session will begin with a brief seated meditation\, followed by a walking meditation through selected exhibits. Along the way\, participants will pause with gentle mindfulness prompts designed to support personal reflection\, embodied awareness\, and a deeper connection with the artwork. Rather than offering art historical interpretation\, the experience encourages each participant to notice what arises within them through presence\, stillness\, and mindful seeing. The group will honor noble silence throughout much of the session with occasional opportunities for brief reflection and sharing. No previous meditation experience is needed. \nJoin Joshua on 8/22\, 10/3\, 11/7\, and 12/5. \nJoshua Canter is a mindfulness meditation teacher and the founder of True Nature Travels and Education\, an Asheville-based organization that has offered transformative retreats and educational experiences around the world for more than 20 years. He holds a master’s degree in Contemplative Psychology and is passionate about making mindfulness accessible\, grounded\, and relevant to everyday life.

SUMMARY:Margaret Curtis: Mental Notes
DESCRIPTION:The works included in this exhibition span over a decade and focus on themes of climate change\, societal decay\, and apocalyptic dread. With distinct wit and craftsmanship\, Curtis addresses these universal threats from a deeply personal perspective. \nThe work\, Spot Fire and Flash Flood\, is informed by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire of 2022\, which significantly altered the landscape near her second home of Las Vegas\, New Mexico. Additionally\, three works from her series Burning Bridges addresses related themes of destruction by fire and flood following the impact of Hurricane Helene on Western North Carolina. \nAlso included are a series of monoprints entitled Earth Ear\, in these images\, Curtis invites us to consider whether an earth-based intelligence or consciousness exists. Rounding out the exhibition are several works from her Auriferous\, Emotional Cartographies and Weapons of War series\, which explore journalistic sensationalism\, political division and our Nation’s culture of violence. Lastly\, several of Curtis’ sketchbooks will be on display.

SUMMARY:Patio Show: JM Stevens
DESCRIPTION:– LIMITED PATIO SEATING IS FIRST COME FIRST SERVE \nJM Stevens \n“I’d never done a stripped-down album like this before\,” says Austin\, Texas-based Americana artist JM Stevens. “It felt like a bold move and a challenge to myself to go in that direction\, as there’s nothing to hide behind.” \nStevens is referring to his third solo effort\, Wish on a River Bridge\, which arrived March 7\, 2025. Following 15-plus years fronting the Austin rock quartet Moonlight Towers and two solo albums featuring full-band arrangements\, he pivoted to his acoustic guitars and harmonicas for River Bridge. Throughout its 10 songs\, Stevens gives voice to protagonists who are navigating old beginnings\, new starts and myriad in-betweens\, and sonically\, there’s an atmosphere akin to Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska and Tom Petty’s Wildflowers. Stevens\, who tracked Wish on a River Bridge at his East Austin Recording facility\, was meticulous when it came to the album’s final mix\, using quarter-inch tape for a more vintage sound. \nIt’s the same level of detail Stevens puts into all aspects of his music\, and his catalog has prompted praise from the University of Texas radio station KUTX\, which calls him “one of the most reputable singer-songwriters in the Austin music scene today.” National print outlets and respected music websites have taken notice as well\, with Goldmine magazine dubbing Stevens a “master craftsman” whose songs “sound as if they’ve been lingering in the ethos forever.” With Wish on a River Bridge\, JM Stevens has crafted a body of work showcasing what he’s all about as a singer\, songwriter\, guitarist and producer.
