SUMMARY:Mike Wiley Productions presents “Changing Same”
DESCRIPTION:*Please note: All performances will take place at the YMI Cultural Center at 39 S. Market St. Downtown Asheville* \nOn July 8\, 1944\, Private Booker T. Spicely boarded a bus in downtown Durham but never made it back to camp. The Black soldier\, newly stationed at a nearby Army base and unfamiliar with the South’s Jim Crow laws\, was shot twice in the chest by the bus driver after a dispute over his seat. The driver reboarded the bus and continued his route. An all-White jury later acquitted him in 28 minutes. \nAward-winning playwright and performer Mike Wiley brings Spicely\, the driver\, and a chorus of witnesses back to life in this searing solo show — excavating a story that faded from public memory in a city known for its progressive views\, visionary Black entrepreneurs\, and institutes of higher learning. \nJoin Mike Wiley for a Q&A following each performance. \nGeneral Admission Adult Tickets: $35\nStudent Tickets: $15 (18 and under/ college and graduate students with student ID)\nWednesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays: 7:30pm ; Sundays: 2pm\n“Choose Your Price” Nights: Wednesdays & Thursdays (11/4-11/5 & 11/11-11/12)

SUMMARY:Rumpelstiltskin - Playhouse Jr. - 11/12-11/15
DESCRIPTION:\nA world premiere musical spun from the Grimm Brothers’ classic — a tale of gold\, grit\, and a touch of magic\, set to a captivating score that fuses folk\, rap\, and percussion. \nThe kingdom is in crisis\, the villagers are hungry\, and their future rests in the hands of a poor miller’s daughter. Her only hope is a daring bargain with a mysterious stranger — one that tests the worth of a name\, the power of trust\, and the courage to spark change. \nThis new musical explores the cost of greed and the grace of kindness\, reminding us that what truly matters can’t be measured in gold. \nBe the first to experience a brand-new American musical by Ben Mackel\, developed through the Playhouse Jr. Licensing New Works Initiative. Created entirely under our roof\, this world premiere offers new theatre for all — big and small — continuing a bright new chapter of storytelling from the Playhouse’s stage to the world’s. \nEvent Times:\n11/12 – 7pm\, 11/13 – 7pm\, 11/14 – 2pm & 6pm \, 11/15 – 2pm

SUMMARY:PAINTERLY ENCAUSTIC: LANDSCAPES with Bridget Benton
DESCRIPTION:Explore encaustic as a pure painting medium while creating a beautifully textured landscape! If you’ve been struggling to use color and encaustic paint in your mixed-media encaustic work or want an introduction to encaustic that’s painterly rather than collage-based\, this may be the workshop for you. \nWhile we will be working from photos\, students will be encouraged to simplify and slightly abstract their landscapes rather than trying to create photo-realistic copies. Encaustic is an expressive media with a mind of its own! We’ll be working WITH the medium rather than against it and playing to its strengths: rich color\, luminous depth\, and incredible texture. \nIn this beginner-friendly workshop\, you’ll learn: \n– Encaustic Safety \n– Easy ways to start your painting that set you up for success \n– How to build up & fuse your layers for maximum visual depth \n– How to achieve both smooth & textured surfaces \n– Tips & Tricks for using your brushes & controlling your paint \n– Working with the transparency and opacity of your paint \n– How to bring in detail and crisp lines!
