SUMMARY:The Campfireball: Failure
DESCRIPTION:A storytelling show about you—the audience—The Campfireball is created spontaneously out of whatever stories and lives happen to be gathered together inside Story Parlor at that moment in time. There’s nothing to prepare and nothing to fear—participation is never required\, and the show is just as much fun to sit back and watch unfold as it is to play along. Come on out for a night of storytelling you will literally never be able to experience again. Never possible to know what’s coming next\, each Campfireball slowly begins to reveal surprises\, connections\, and communitas as the space transforms from a room of strangers to a room of neighbors. \nWorkshopped and developed over two years in the master’s program for storytelling at East Tennessee State University and showcased at the 2023 Asheville Fringe Festival\, host/storyteller Cory Howard (National Storytelling Festival\, Moth Grand Slam winner) blends intimacy and absurdity in an effort to shepherd the audience through ridiculous yet reverent ways of drawing out their life experiences. \nThis month you and The Campfireball will take a journey through everyone’s favorite feeling: FAILURE. Mistakes! Totally Blowing it! Disasters! Errors in judgement\, coming up short\, missing the mark\, embarrassments\, actually trying and…NOT succeeding. What is life but a steady stumbling forward\, and on May 9th let’s try (and possibly fail) to find a way to rejoice in the biffing of it all. \nFeaturing special guests: \nMud Flap Monday \nThis improv duo of Gillian Bellinger and Matt Peikin will interview an audience member about failure using that as a springboard for a completely improvised performance. Along with several television screen credits\, Gillian Bellinger has been an improviser for 20+ years at The Second City\, The Annoyance\, IO West\, The Groundlings\, and Westside Comedy Theater. In Asheville\, she is the founder and Artistic Director of Misfit Improv & Acting School. Matt Peiken performed improv for more than 20 years in Minneapolis and Cincinnati before moving to Asheville in 2017 and joining the first resident troupe of the Asheville Improv Collective.

SUMMARY:Dogwood with Emma Garau / John Dikeman Trio
DESCRIPTION:Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center presents Dogwood (Emma Garau) and the John Dikeman Trio for an evening performance. \nDogwood is an evolving rendition of Garau’s solo project; reimagined as a live\, improvised performance. Built around an exploration of rhythmic and tonal textures on drum set\, Dogwood combines elements of soundscape\, free jazz\, and electronic music into a performance that oscillates between deceptively delicate and unapologetically dissonant.\nEmma Garau is a drummer and composer based in Asheville\, NC. She graduated with a BFA in jazz and contemporary music from UNC Asheville in 2022 while independently studying with Dave King of The Bad Plus\, and touring extensively with Fortezza- which she co-founded in 2016. Emma currently tours and records with art punk duo\, ¿WATCHES?\, Powder Horns\, and as a solo artist. \nJohn Dikeman is an American saxophonist currently residing in Amsterdam. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources\, his playing runs the gamut of improvised music and technique\, ranging from reductionist extended technique based improvisation to full throttle free jazz. The underlying characteristic of his music is an unnerving commitment\, a total abandonment to sound.

SUMMARY:Hybrid | Mothership: Greg Wrenn with Alanna Collins\, Davi de Paula\, and Yara Yaworâ
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Mothership Reading and Rainforest Medicine Concert with Eco-Memoirist Greg Wrenn along with Alanna Collins\, Davi de Paula\, and Yara Yaworâ. \nThis hybrid event is free but registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance. \nWeaving together memoir and 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles\, Mothership is not only a brave\, queer coming-of-age story. It’s a deeply researched account of how ayahuasca and endangered coral reefs helped Greg heal from complex PTSD—a disorder of trust\, which makes the very act of bonding with someone else panic-inducing. From the tide pools in Florida where he grew up\, to Indonesia’s Raja Ampat archipelago and the Amazon rainforest\, Greg takes his readers on a journey across the globe\, waking up his ecological conscience along the way. He dives into both the ocean and the psyche\, and finds they have a lot in common. This is Greg’s audacious search for wholeness when talk therapy and pharmaceuticals did little to help. But will doses of nature be enough to save us before it’s too late? \nA former Stegner Fellow at Stanford University\, Greg Wrenn is the author of Mothership: A Memoir of Wonder and Crisis\, an evidence-based account of his turning to psychedelic plants and endangered coral reefs to heal from complex PTSD\, and Centaur\, which was awarded the Brittingham Prize. His work has appeared in The New Republic\, Al Jazeera\, The Rumpus\, Kenyon Review\, New England Review\, The Iowa Review\, and elsewhere. As an associate English professor at James Madison University\, he weaves climate change science into literary studies. A student of ayahuasca since 2019\, he is a trained yoga teacher and a PADI Advanced Open Water diver\, having explored coral reefs around the world for over 25 years. He lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with his husband and their growing family of trees. \nAlanna Collins is the co-founder of Truth is One and leader of the Asheville branch. She is a facilitator of plant medicine ceremonies and has undergone training and initiation from an Umbandaime community where she lived and studied in the Amazon of Acre\, Brazil. She has also studied with Davi de Paula\, a world renown ‘caboclo’ from the Umbandaime Tradition in Brazil\, the Yawanawa tribe in the Brazilian Amazon\, and Alonso del Rio\, a Peruvian master. She is an official member of the Santo Daime Church in both the U.S.A and Brazil and received her initiation into the lineage in 2017. She has been facilitating ceremonies with grandmother medicine and Kambo in various parts of the U.S. since 2018. She brings groups to the Amazon of Brazil to participate in the process of harvesting and cooking medicine and facilitates Kambo training programs in both Brazil and the U.S. in partnership with Davi de Paula. Alanna is a unique practitioner with her formal background as a psychiatric registered nurse. \nDavi de Paula is a spiritual leader of the Santo Daime doctrine in the Nova Era Community in the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest\, where he carries out spiritual experiences and community work. He is deeply knowledgeable about the mysteries of the Amazon and one of the greatest practitioners of Santo Daime and Ayahuasca in Latin America. He has worked with Kambô medicine since he was 9 years old with mastery and knowledge of the ancestry and sacredness of this portal\, being one of the first to expand and present this medicine to the world. He also works with Rapé (pronouned rap-eh) medicine that he learned from the Yawanawá Indigenous people of his region and with Sananga\, the sacred eye drops to open our third eye\, among other forest medicines. From a young age\, he has developed a strong role in environmental activism with the native communities of his region in the fight for the preservation of the Amazon rainforest. In addition to being a daimista and ayahuasqueiro\, Davi is also a student of the sacred Umbanda\, in which he studies Afro-Brazilian culture that contains the lines of the sacred Orixás\, elementals of nature\, Hinduism and also the Indigenous traditions of his region where he has strong alliances with all the local Indigenous peoples. \nYara Yaworâ has walked the spiritual path since her birth through the line of Umbanda. From a young age in Brazil\, she connected with drum medicine\, becoming Ogã of an Umbanda temple\, which was where she grew and developed for 14 years. During this journey she received an in-depth study on the sacred Atabaque drum. In deep studies with Forest Medicines\, she received a call to continue walking with other lines of study\, such as Ancestral Shamanism and Christic Shamanism\, Santo Daime\, and Hinduism.

SUMMARY:The Age of Deer by Erika Howsare - reading at Malaprop's Bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Erika Howsare will read from her new nonfiction book\, The Age of Deer: Trouble and Kinship with Our Wild Neighbors. The book is a masterful hybrid of nature writing and cultural studies that investigates our connection with deer—from mythology to biology\, from forests to cities\, from coexistence to control and extermination—and invites readers to contemplate the paradoxes of how humans interact with and shape the natural world. Kirkus and Publishers Weekly both gave starred reviews to this book\, which the Washington Post calls a “masterpiece.”

SUMMARY:JM Stevens at The Grey Eagle
DESCRIPTION:An acclaimed Americana and roots rock/pop singer\, songwriter\, and producer\, Stevens returns three years after his well-received solo debut\, Invisible Lines. The new collection\, the 10-song Nowhere to Land (released 4/12/24) is an overall mellower\, more vulnerable record than its predecessor\, though still speckled with some up-tempo rockers. It’s a thoughtful album further set apart by Stevens’ nuanced songcraft\, intimate vocals\, and organic production. \nDittyTV praised Stevens as\, “In that sweet spot of pop-rock represented by guys like Bruce Springsteen\, Jackson Browne\, John Cafferty\, Tom Petty\, [and] Don Henley\,” while The Big Takeover noted how his “Supremely tasteful arrangements keep excess far at bay.”
