SUMMARY:PERFORMANCE: flux in time
DESCRIPTION:flux in time: a heterotpic theater from the aborted future (2025)\nSaturday\, September 27th\, 2025 at 8pm\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nFREE and open to all – No Registration Required \nJoin us on Saturday\, September 27th for an interactive performance presented in conjunction with the 15th Annual ReVIEWING Black Mountain College International Conference. Kyriakos Apostolidis\, gordon fung\, Kim Nucci\, Che Pai\, and Kyle Price of //sense\, a Chicago-based neo-Fluxus theater troupe\, will stage an immersive “theater of mixed means” that weaves a metaphorical and metaphysical network through history\, art\, and life\, paying homage to the legacy of BMC. \nThis performance invites audiences to collectively revisit the past and reimagine the future. Through the embodied actions of its artists\, the troupe transforms time and space into heterotopic sites where multiple centers across eras converge in the present moment. Conceiving individuals as living time capsules\, the performers fuse human experiences into intellectual rhizomes\, cultivating a shared terrain of intelligence\, consciousness\, and the cosmic mind.\n___ \ngordon fung (b. 1988\, San Francisco\, CA; lives in Chicago\, IL) is a transdisciplinary artist-curator who works with large-scale curatorial/collaborative practices\, experimental audiovisual performances\, new media installations\, noise music\, experimental film/video\, media archaeology\, participatory works\, and happenings. His works highlight unconventional executions like equipment misapplication\, lo-fi presentations\, and glitches. Such aesthetics confront the viewers’ understanding\, perspective\, and point of view on reality through a more philosophical and esoteric investigation.\n___ \nKyriakos Apostolidis (b. Drama\, Greece 1991) is a performance artist\, movement researcher\, and the founder of Morphoplastics\, a practice-based research project in the field of performance studies—an embodied investigation into the performer’s body as a means of expression and knowledge. Their live performances present movement-based endurance actions while involving audio-visual installations at the intersection of art & technology. In addition to performing with //sense\, Kyriakos will present a workshop at ReVIEWING 15.\n____ \nChe Pai is a Chicago-based Taiwanese artist whose practice spans photography\, performance\, and meditation\, primarily manifested through the medium of artist’s books. His unique approach involves conducting images and employing book structures to invite play and performance\, adding a dynamic layer to the contemplative journey of reading. Drawing inspiration from contemporary literature\, slow cinema\, and the physical theater of Tai Chi\, Che’s artwork transforms the reading experience into a multi-sensory exploration.\n___ \nKim Nucci is a Chicago/Oakland-based media artist\, composer\, improviser\, and technologist. They perform on electronics\, synthesizers\, and saxophones. In their studio practice\, they create interactive installations using architectural intervention\, light\, projection\, microcontrollers\, temporary sculpture and painting. Nucci’s research interests explore the pedestrian cybernetic body\, critically examining our relationship with technology/our instruments. Their solo performance practice is invested in ritualism and trance states in improvisation. They hold an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media\, an MA in Music Composition from Mills College\, and a BA from Bennington College.\n____ \nKyle Gregory Price is a genre-fluid composer\, percussionist and turntablist by trade\, who regularly produces work in other mediums including stop-motion animation\, jewelry making\, costume design and dance/movement. He has been a practicing artist for over twenty years. Raised in a one stoplight town in Upstate New York\, Kyle put himself through college\, earned a Bachelors of Music in Composition from SUNY Fredonia in 2005 and was active in the Buffalo art scene for several years before migrating to Chicago in 2010. Since moving to Chicago he has performed solo and collaboratively\, and served as the composer and bandleader in various projects ranging from punk and noise to chamber music and free-jazz.

DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ridge Orchestra takes its performances on the road for its 26th season debut under the leadership of Music Director Dr. Emily Mariko Eng. “Post-Helene: Remembering\, Rebuilding\, Reimagining” captures an array of emotions in two September events. We are proud to collaborate with UNCA as they honor WNC’s resilience one year after Hurricane Helene\, Post-Helene “Remembering\, Rebuilding\, Reimagining” Symposium. \nThrough music\, we reflect on the impact of Hurricane Helene\, one year later. This program features: the world premiere of Sinfonietta Helene by Asheville-based composer Jay Sanders; Iman Habibi’s Jeder Baum spricht\, which is inspired by the beauty of nature and the impact of climate change; Elgar’s “Nimrod” from Enigma Variations to honor the memories of the people and places we lost; and local composer Phillip Rhodes’s Concerto for Bluegrass\, a nod to the resilience of WNC. \nThe BRO’s home at UNC Asheville is undergoing a multi-year scheduled renovation. While displaced from Lipinsky Hall\, we are excited to bring our music to a venue near you! \nOur passionate group of volunteer musicians will perform in the charming Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church\, east of Asheville\, and the renowned Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville. SUMMARY:Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra - Masterworks 1
DESCRIPTION:Our season opener celebrates composers who preserved their identity amidst pressures to conform to the status quo. Dvorak refused to Germanize his name for his publishers\, Sibelius rejected continental Romanticism\, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor\, a descendant of enslaved Africans dealt with racism and elitism his entire life in late 19th century Britain. Each one of these pieces are the works for which these composers derived their fame\, and each are a statement of resistance to oppression.

SUMMARY:Tunnel Studios Inaugural Open Studio Event
DESCRIPTION:Tunnel Studios\, a new artist studio collective and gallery space in East Asheville\, will open its doors to the public on Sunday\, September 21\, from 12–6 p.m. for its first Open Studio event. Located at 940 Tunnel Road\, the historic building was originally constructed in 1948 by jewelry maker Stuart Nye\, who also built the Southern Highland Craft Guild gallery next door\, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. \nThe event will feature the work of eleven artists in residence\, including Katherine Caldwell (woven wheat)\, Sarah Carawan (mixed media)\, Lissa Friedman (oil paintings)\, Mitch Kolbe (oil paintings)\, Elizabeth Walton (jewelry)\, Deb Kolp (painting and mixed media)\, Aaron Rose (textiles)\, Chelsey Noel (mixed media and textiles)\, Wren Ribble (mixed media)\, Elena Ribble (jewelry)\, and Jude Stuecker (textiles). \nTunnel Studios is the result of a unique collaboration between neighbors and friends. Co-owners Jude Stuecker and Paul Dixon are married\, as are fellow co-owners Will Eccleston and Allison Williams. The four decided to embark on the renovation project together\, unified by their shared interest in preserving Asheville’s craft history and providing more space for artists to work and connect. All four owners have brought their own specific skills to the project\, sharing the burden in a way that feels equitable and inspiring. \n“I really loved the building and the history of it\,” said Stuecker\, “specifically Stuart Nye’s role in the craft scene in Asheville starting in the 1920s and ’30s. The building was designed for making art\, and I wanted to preserve its use and intention. I also thought we could bring more of the art scene to East Asheville and provide opportunities to artists who needed spaces\, specifically those who were displaced during Helene.” \nDixon emphasized the architectural importance of the structure. “I was drawn to the building’s style of ‘Rustic Modernism’ and its role in Asheville’s craft history\,” Dixon said. “Preserving this space for creative work just felt like the right thing to do.”\n“I was excited to join Jude and Paul in this endeavor as it is an opportunity for us to connect with and even add to the creative community in Asheville\,” said Williams. “I have loved being a part of it all and seeing the space evolve into what it is now.” \nEccleston adds\, “When I think about all of the things this building could’ve become\, it feels good to be a part of making it Tunnel Studios.” \nArtists also share a deep enthusiasm for their new space. Jeweler Elizabeth Walton said\, “Moving into this studio is particularly special to me because I did a summer internship for Stuart Nye Jewelry when I was 14. Getting to move into this building now with my own jewelry business feels so full circle. The building has so much history both personally and communally and I hope to carry that spirit forward through the growth I anticipate happening as a result of being part of Tunnel Studios.” \nFor painter Mitch Kolbe\, this will be the first time in decades that he has had a working studio outside of his home. “It will be nice to once again have a space that is large enough that I can do both painting and sculpting in the same space\,” he said. “We are even planning to use the front room as a little show space for those artists that are interested in a little retail store. The possibilities are endless really and I’m so grateful that this historical gem in East Asheville was saved as a real working artist space.” \nWheat weaver Katherine Caldwell reflects on the building’s legacy. “I love that it has always been used—in fact was designed—for craft work\,” Caldwell said. “Although we are creating different things in different ways\, I love that the vibe has always been to maintain a business from working with one’s hands. There is so much history of steady handiwork there. To me it is a testimony to the focus being on the daily work going on inside and not the trappings of trendy stylings to work environment. Everything is simply functional\, like a muted canvas for which creative work can be done without distraction or interruption.” \nThe public is invited to tour the studios\, meet the artists\, and view a wide range of artwork during the September 21 event. \nEvent Details:\nTunnel Studios Open Studio\nSunday\, September 21\, 12–6 p.m.\n940 Tunnel Road\, East Asheville \nFor more information\, find @tunnelstudiosavl on Instagram.
