In this two-day workshop\, students will complete two original paintings while exploring innovative mixed-media techniques. \nYou’ll create: \nOne oil painting using a brayer and brushes to apply the paint.\nOne oil painting on paper\, enhanced with soft pastel exploring a different surface and approach\nThis workshop is designed for artists who want to expand their creative process and experiment with new techniques in a supportive\, small-group setting. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. Anne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

This week we have Denver legend Ben Roy at FBRB! \nIf you aren’t familiar with Ben Roy\, he’s been taking comedy audiences by storm since 2004\, bringing an unparalleled energy and unique voice to the stage. Often compared to Lewis Black or Bill Hicks due to his passionate\, ranting approach\, Roy has a style that is definitively his own. \nRoy cut his comedic teeth in Denver at the world famous Comedy Works. Since then\, Ben has been selected to perform at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival (for New Faces\, The Nasty Show\, and his own hour show)\, Just For Laughs Toronto\, Just For Laughs Chicago\, The New York Comedy Festival\, Austin’s South by Southwest festival (where he was an official invitee for both music and comedy in the same year)\, and many more. \nRoy has been featured on HBO’s Funny as Hell series; as well as on the Comedy Central shows Adam DeVine’s House Party\, Corporate\, @midnight\, This Is Not Happening\, and TruTV’s Talk Show The Game Show. For Anne painting begins with what you cannot see. She poses questions to herself before starting a painting. What is drawing me to this subject? What is the story I want to tell? What am I trying to express in each painting? No single mark is precious. No fear is allowed to enter the process behind the easel. All elements of the composition must work in unity. This process is critical for infusing energy into my work and allows me to respond directly to the piece as it evolves. \nAnne’s journey as an artist has been a fulfilling adventure\, leading her from fashion and textile designer in NYC\, to teaching and developing art curricula for children in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 2013 Anne turned her focus to fine art. After viewing a pastel exhibition at the Noyse Museum of Art in Hammonton N.J. Anne began her journey with the pastel medium. The tangible aspects of the medium\, with the ability to draw\, paint\, layer\, and combine with other mediums has led her on an energetic journey pushing the qualities of pastel in her work. Anne’s work has been featured in the Pastel Journal multiple times\, Pratique Des Arts and Strokes of Genius and the 2022 and 2024 IAPS Souvenir Book. She has written multiple articles for the Pastel Journal and Artist Magazine. Anne is the past president and workshop chair of the Piedmont Pastel Society. In 2019 she participated in the Dueling Demonstration event at the International Association of Pastel Societies convention which occurs every two years. In 2022 and 2024 Anne was invited back to be one of the faculty artists to demonstrate her techniques at the convention. Anne holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives in Pickens\, South Carolina.

DESCRIPTION:Join Anne in the studio for four Wednesdays in July for an open-format pastel class designed to help you develop and refine your skills in this richly expressive medium. Each session will include guided exercises that focus on core artistic principles alongside techniques that bring energy and life to your work. Participants are to bring their own reference materials to personalize their experience. Pastels\, paper\, and a range of supplies for sketching and underpainting will be provided\, with sanded paper available for purchase. \nPlease bring a small sketchbook; 2B (or softer) pencil and a gum eraser; and black\, medium gray and light gray markers. While pastels will be provided\, it is recommended that you bring your own pastels as well so you can learn what colors you may need to add to your personal pastel inventory.
