DESCRIPTION:The Grey Eagle and Worthwhile Sounds Present \nDana and Alden: Papa’s Boat Tour \nJazz duo Dana & Alden have always had a wanderlust\, something they credit to their maternal grandfather. Affectionately known as Papa\, he was the kind of person others naturally gravitate towards. It was a photograph from one of his trips to Asia that inspired the Eugene\, OR duo’s new album Papa’s Boat. In the image Papa is looking out across the horizon and stood next to his boat Sŵn y Môr (Welsh for “Sound of the Sea.”) \n“I think so much of what Alden and I are doing comes from just watching him live his own unique life\,” says Dana. Alden agrees. “His emboldened\, passionate personality gave us permission to be our own selves\, to be unconventional and draw outside of the box.”\nRecorded with Malcolm Catto in London in March 2025\, Papa’s Boat combines all their childhood love and global experience to create an ecstatic sound built on Dana’s saxophone and Alden’s drums. Recorded with the duo’s backing band\, Ebba Dankel (vocals and keys)\, Andrew Mitchell (bass)\, Eli Torgersen (vocals and guitar) and Salim Charvet (sax and synths)\, Papa’s Boat is rooted in jazz but pulling influence from indie\, pop\, rap\, bossa nova\, and beyond. A hypnotic combination of sax and buzzing synths on “Lighthouse” sets the tone for an album that uses water as both a reflective surface and a body to get lost in. Elsewhere there are collaborations with Mei Semones\, Melanie Charles\, and legendary Brazilian songwriter Marcos Valle\, a hero figure to the band who appears on “El Gaucho” and “Friendship Is A Boat.” \nThroughout its runtime Papa’s Boat sails purposefully between memories of the past and visions of a brighter future. It doesn’t just commemorate their Papa as a beloved character\, but shares him with the world.

DESCRIPTION:Shibori is a Japanese method of resist dying which goes back hundreds of years. Indigo dye is often used to get the distinctive patterns you may recognize in today’s fashion and home décor fabrics. \nIn this hands-on two-day workshop\, artist Diane Kuehn will share the fundamentals of shibori folding and binding techniques to create beautiful patterns on fabric with indigo dye. We will also learn to prepare an indigo vat and how to prepare fabric to dye with scouring techniques. Students can expect to make pillow or napkin sized sample pieces and a cotton scarf. An additional small piece of clothing to upcycle can be brought from home.

SUMMARY:ENCOUNTERS WITH CREATIVES – JERRY MAXEY\, BASKET AND MIXED MEDIA ARTIST
DESCRIPTION:(FREE) Jerry Maxey will be on hand to demonstrate his basket weaving techniques developed over decades of persistent and skillful mastery. \nJerry’s work is wicker-weave basketry of dyed rattan and seagrass cord\, and lathe turned wood bases\, rings and rims. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind handmade original\, even when he makes a second piece with the same construction. The wood incorporated in his basketry is all found wood\, generally trees that have fallen in storms\, and the wooden elements have all the variety that nature provides. Once the wood has been turned\, he leaves them indoors for at least three weeks to cure and stabilize. Then he does a final sanding and finishes each piece with pure tung oil. The rattan spokes are then attached to the wood to construct the basket\, weaving in the colors and patterns as he goes. When completed\, he finishes the entire piece with tung oil to bring out the colors and produce a slightly aged patina to the work.

Indigo dye is often used to get the distinctive patterns you may recognize in today’s fashion and home décor fabrics. \nIn this hands-on two-day workshop\, artist Diane Kuehn will share the fundamentals of shibori folding and binding techniques to create beautiful patterns on fabric with indigo dye. We will also learn to prepare an indigo vat and how to prepare fabric to dye with scouring techniques. Students can expect to make pillow or napkin sized sample pieces and a cotton scarf. An additional small piece of clothing to upcycle can be brought from home. \nSuitable for beginner and intermediate skill levels.

They might be based in Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, but their acclaimed debut album Holy Island (released in November 2025 via Sonic Cathedral and Well Kept Secret) is a concept record about the ancient religious outpost off the coast of northeast England.

DESCRIPTION:“Play on\, there’s no such thing as better days\,” Damien Jurado sings on “Roger\,” the sweeping wash of a song that opens Reggae Film Star\, his 18th full length album and second release from Jurado’s own Maraqopa Records label. But as he enters his 25th year as a recording artist\, it’s clear these are\, at the least\, very good days for Jurado on the creative front. In these 12 songs\, which evoke half-recalled dreams and overheard conversations\, the cosmic rushes headlong into the autobiographical and specific moments on the clock fade from past to future to scenes set only in the eternal now. Playing out like a backlot documentary filmed on the location of an unnamed TV or film set—maybe a sitcom taping\, or perhaps it’s a low budget science fiction B-movie\, or could it be a talk show?—the album is populated by performers awaiting call times\, camera operators praying for their shot\, and studio audiences rapt with anticipation. The stars here eschew glitz and glamor. Instead\, they wander grocery stores and parking lots in the verdant Pacific Northwest and the desert Southwest\, looking for payphones and a sense of purpose. Produced by Jurado with multi-instrumentalist Josh Gordon and recording engineer Alex Bush at Sonikwire studio in Irvine\,CA\, Jurado’s home away from home and musical headquarters\, the record’s compositions are among the most musically rich in his vast discography\, encompassing romantic AM gold\, ‘60s psychedelia\, driving rock & roll\, Latin shuffles\, and left of the dial ambiance. Strings swell\, melodic bass bubbles\, and piano sparkles\, undergirding Jurado’s unmistakable voice\, at once intimately present and ghostly\, grounded in the here and now but capable\, at any moment\, of drifting off into the divinatory. Following threads established by 2021’s The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania\, the album sees Jurado embracing his auteur era\, penning vignettes that arrive with little fanfare and depart quicker than you might suspect\, only to linger long after they wrap. Seeking a skeleton key to decipher the action is beside the point—Jurado’s songs are worlds meant to be lived in\, not picked apart—but on the beatific single “What Happened To The Class Of ‘65?” the singer imagines himself as both the viewer and the viewed\, the eye behind the camera and its subject. This emotional and spiritual transference animates Reggae Film Star. Like a masterful director\, Jurado offers motivation to the listener\, staring unblinkingly from the mise-en-scène in your mind. “Look into the camera\,” he commands on “The Day Of The Robot\,” “One more time with anger/And sadness/I believe you.” A quarter-century in\, Jurado remains gripped by his visions and driven by an unmatched creative drive. John’s oil paintings are strongly influenced by the Hudson River School\, the Luminism movement\, and the masters of the Renaissance. His pastels\, with their beautiful pure pigments\, are like no other artist’s. All of his work is known for having a strong sense of light and peace. He currently draws inspiration from the wildlife in Western North Carolina which include visiting bears\, extraordinary birds\, his beautiful wife\, and their four cats.

As we celebrate our 100th year\, Centennial Sounds honors this legacy by spotlighting the cultural richness of Appalachian music and the many voices that shape it. This special performance series will feature five headliners whose work expands and redefines the story of Appalachian music. Through these concerts\, we aim to create new opportunities for our community in Western North Carolina to experience the full spectrum of Appalachian sound.

SUMMARY:Earth-folk Craft Mentorship
DESCRIPTION:This 7-month mentorship journey (September–March) brings together a small cohort for 12 immersive class days with 8 different teachers\, offering hands-on experiences in broom-making\, wild pottery\, spoon carving\, willow basketry\, beeswax candle making\, hand quilting\, pyrography\, and blacksmithing. Rooted in community\, presence\, and earth-based practice\, this mentorship invites participants to slow down\, work with their hands\, and create beautiful\, functional objects for everyday life. \nAt its heart\, this mentorship is about remembering — remembering how to work with our hands\, how to be held in community\, and how to reconnect with ourselves through craft and embodied practice. Designed for those who feel called toward craft as a way of life\, this space offers an opportunity for discovery\, growth\, play\, and deeper connection alongside salt-of-the-earth teachers and a supportive community.
