SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. Palaces for the People is an exhibition about his life and works. It is now open at Asheville Museum of History\, in the city where Guastavino completed his final projects. Unable to find a seat in the tiny Catholic church in Asheville\, he built his last great structure\, the St. Lawrence Basilica. In Asheville\, the exhibit will feature additional elements and artifacts highlighting Guastavino’s time in and around the city. The Exhibition is a co-operative venture of the Guastavino Alliance\, Christmount\, Swannanoa Valley Museum\, and St. Lawrence Basilica.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Vera B. Williams / STORIES
DESCRIPTION:Vera B. Williams / STORIES\nEight Decades of Politics and Picture Making\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center\nJanuary 26 – May 11\, 2024 \nVera B. Williams\, an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books\, started making pictures almost as soon as she could walk. She studied at Black Mountain College in a time where summer institutes were held with classes taught by John Cage and Merce Cunningham. Williams studied under the Bauhaus luminary Josef Albers and went on to make art for the rest of her life. At the time of her death\, The New York Times wrote: “Her illustrations\, known for bold colors and a style reminiscent of folk art\, were praised by reviewers for their great tenderness and crackling vitality.” Despite numerous awards and recognition for her children’s books\, much of her wider life and work remains unexplored. This retrospective will showcase the complete range of Williams’ life and work. It will highlight her time at Black Mountain College\, her political activism\, and her establishment\, with Paul Williams\, of an influential yet little-known artist community\, in addition to her work as an author and illustrator.

SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Die Walkure ("The Valkyrie")
DESCRIPTION:In a plot worthy of “Game of Thrones\,” Die Walkure (The Valkyrie) opens with twins separated at birth who are illegitimate children of the god Wotan and fall madly in love at first sight! Their love infuriates Wotan’s powerful wife\, so he is compelled to send his warrior daughter\, the Valkyrie Brunnhilde\, to ensure that someone dies. These characters\, so filled with love and conflict\, reveal that the mythical world is not so different from our own. This magnificently staged opera features some of the greatest and most familiar of all classical music including the thundering “Ride of the Valkyries” and features today’s greatest Wagnerian singers on our stage. \nGreer Grimsley whose “commanding presence and sonorous voice” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) reprises the role of Wotan is joined by acclaimed dramatic soprano Christine Goerke who is celebrated around the world as Brunnhilde. Sung in German with English supertitles. The production is 4 hours 25 minutes with two intermissions. A Tomer Zvulun Production. \nThis production will also be happening live in Atlanta on April 27\, April 30\, May 3\, and May 5th. If you’re interested in learning more about the in-person production\nvisit: https://www.atlantaopera.org/performance/die-walkure-2024/

SUMMARY:Lonesome Station Presents: Lydia Luce + Special Guest
DESCRIPTION:Lonesome Station Presents and evening with singer-songwriter Lydia Luce on Saturday\, May 4. Doors at 6 p.m. and show at 7 p.m. $15 advance\, $18 at the door. \nOn her new album Florida Girl\, Lydia Luce offers up a body of work graced with all the transformative beauty of watercolor\, at turns delicate\, dreamlike\, and instantly potent in its emotional realism. The second full-length from the Fort Lauderdale-born singer/songwriter\, Florida Girl matches its luminous form of indie-folk with an in-depth examination of Luce’s inner life\, exploring everything from mortality to body image to the ineffable intricacy of human connection. As she bares her soul and unburdens her heart\, Luce slowly embraces her own infinite complexity—ultimately arriving at the self-possessed state of mind that inspired the album’s title.
