SUMMARY:Palaces for the People: Guastavino's Great American Places
DESCRIPTION:From 1882 to 1943\, in 31 states and six countries\, Raphael Guastavino and his son created more than 600 unique tile domes and vaultings that met his criteria of health\, safety\, and beauty. SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Stellar Picks: A Community Choice Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is for everyone who has a favorite piece of art in the WCU Fine Art Museum collection—or would like to discover one! The Museum recently launched a new web portal for searching the Museum’s permanent collection online. The portal includes images and information about hundreds of works of art from the Museum’s 2\,100-piece collection\, which has a focus on contemporary art of the Americas. The public is invited to browse the new online database and cast a vote for the object they would most like to see on view. Museum staff will tally these votes this spring and present the community’s top picks in April 2024. \nArtwork created by WCU Student Roy Torda.

SUMMARY:Poetry 101: The Curious Practice of Paying Attention
DESCRIPTION:Poetry is the written act of paying attention. Paying attention to words\, rhythm\, and writing but most importantly the worlds that inspire you to write. Namely\, your world. \n“Wanted: a needle swift enough to sew this poem into a blanket.” -Charles Simic \nHave you ever swooned at the thought of exploring your full expression\, only to shuffle around the house more determined to rearrange mothballs than get something on paper? \nPoetry is undoubtedly a practice\, but it doesn’t have to be an intimidating sport for Creative Gods alone. The only “ask” is to take note and notice of your life. \nWe’ll help develop the work itself\, together. \nThis full-bodied beginner’s poetry class will help you shift from “Oof\, I could never…” into “Wait\, where’s my journal?!” by tuning into your world: to the color palette of grass\, to coffee-shop conversation\, to the twitch in your left elbow. If you want language for the volcanic prayers of your soul or to describe your partner’s voice whispering “I love you” at 4am\, we’ll get there. This class weaves the elements of poetry\, forms of poetry\, guided discussion with peers\, and the works of prolific poets all into a multidisciplinary play space. Plus\, oodles (oodles!) of writing time to build personal confidence and craft. This class immerses itself in artful experimentation across mediums\, paired with a toolkit of technical writing skills. It’s the ultimate permission slip to be a beginner. \n“Poetry is an echo\, asking a shadow to dance.” -Carl Sandburg \n5 wk series. 6/5-7/10 (7/3 cancelled)\, Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30p

Come immerse yourself amongst the vibrant and diverse aquatic life calling the cold\, clear\, waters of the upper French Broad home. Our guides will be Luke Etchison – Western Region Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Coordinator with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Kevin Merrill – Owner & Biologist with Oxbow River Snorkeling. \nLuke and Kevin have intimate knowledge of the fish\, reptiles\, amphibians\, and invertebrates on this particular site and within Western North Carolina in general. You’ll learn about what you’re seeing\, the conservation and preservation efforts occurring to help protect these species and their habitats\, and other regional water quality and outdoor recreation projects happening throughout the watershed. \nMasks\, snorkels\, wetsuits\, and booties can be rented through our partnership with Mountains to Seas. If you rent equipment\, please make sure to complete ALL of the sizing fields for each ticketed guest to ensure we get the correct size for wetsuits and booties. \nDue to the sensitivity of the site and the capacity of our guides\, we will be limiting this adventure to two separate two-hour time slots with no more than ten people each. \nThe first tour starts at 10:00 AM and the second tour at 12:00 PM. \nPlease Note that snorkeling tours like this one are at the mercy of Mother Nature. High water velocity and poor visibility following a heavy rain event may create conditions unfavorable for this activity to continue as planned. If this occurs for our scheduled date\, we will unfortunately need to cancel and refund any expenses. \nRegister:\n**If the ticket type or timeslot that you need are not available please contact amy@mountaintrue.org for assistance or to be put on the waitlist. Cyclists will share progress daily through their social media posts.\nWith your help via donations (small\, medium or large)\, together we will raise money to support the museum’s mission to honor veterans\, educate citizens\, and preserve our history. From June 25 to July 1\, Buford and Clarke will bike the parkway from the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to Cherokee\, North Carolina.\nWe invite you to pledge 10 cents or more per mile traveled.
