SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Apply to the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community. \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. You will be notified of your acceptance status in November or December.

SUMMARY:Performance: Ljubinka Kulisic (accordion)
DESCRIPTION:Performance: Ljubinka Kulisic (accordion)\nThursday\, July 25\, 2024 at 7pm\nBlack Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street}\nTICKETS – $15 General Admission / $10 BMCM+AC members + Students w/ID \nJoin us for an exciting performance by accordion virtuoso Ljubinka Kulisic\, featuring works by John Cage and John Zorn\, including Cage’s Dream\, Souvenir\, and Cheap Imitation I and II\, as well as Zorn’s Road Runner. \nAbout the Program: \nThe program features three pieces by John Cage: Dream (1948)\, composed for solo piano and premiered at Black Mountain College on August 20\, 1948. Originally written for Merce Cunningham’s choreography\, this piece’s melodic line and sustained resonances create a haunting and ethereal atmosphere. Souvenir for solo organ showcases Cage’s innovative approach to the organ\, aligning with his prepared instrument aesthetic despite its limited presence in his work. Cheap Imitation I and II (1969)\, inspired by Erik Satie’s Socrate\, highlights Cage’s use of the I Ching for rhythmic patterns. Initially composed for piano\, it marks his return to composition after a seven-year hiatus and reflects his deep personal connection to Satie’s work. \nAdditionally\, the program includes John Zorn’s Road Runner (1986). This thrilling\, cartoon-inspired solo accordion piece captures its namesake’s frenetic energy through rapid jump cuts and dynamic changes. \nAbout Ljubinka Kulisic \nBorn and raised in Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Ljubinka Kulisic is an accordion artist whose repertoire spans music from early baroque (adaptation for free-bass accordion) to contemporary music written for her instrument. As a child\, she won several awards at competitions by performing modern pieces for accordion. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance and Master of Arts in Music Performance from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland in Lugano. She performed solo and in contemporary music ensembles across Europe\, Canada\, and the United States. \nShe participated in numerous festivals\, such as the Act Performance Festival in Dampfzentrale in Bern\, Switzerland\, where she performed pieces for accordion by Arne Nordheim\, and the Contemporary Music Festival” 900 e presente” at the Radio of Italian Switzerland (RSI) she performed pieces by John Cage. \nAt the University of Toronto\, Ljubinka honed her skills and also shared her knowledge as a teaching assistant for the Contemporary Music Ensemble (CME) at the Faculty of Music. In this role\, she led graduate students\, introducing them to new music literature\, compositional techniques\, and ways of interpreting contemporary musical pieces. Her dedication to music education is a testament to her deep understanding of the subject and her commitment to the development of new talent. \nGordon Beeferman – The Stardust Reunion Band with Everett Bradley\, Nicki Richards\, Keith Fluitt (Voices); Joel Harrison (Guitar and Voice); Gordon Beeferman (Piano); Chulo Gatewood (Bass); Tony Lewis (Drums); Andy Clausen (Trombones); Dave Smith (Trumpet); Ben Kono\, Stacey Dillard\, Lisa Parrot (Woodwinds) at Joel Harrison’s New Works – Roulette 01-26-23\nLjubinka’s talent has been recognized on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. She performed as a soloist with the New World Symphony in Miami and at the New England Conservatory in Boston. These performances were not only a testament to her skill but also an opportunity for her to collaborate with esteemed musicians\, including conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and Grammy-award-winning violist Kim Kashkashian. \nLjubinka was a full-time artist at the Ojai Music Festival 2024. Her interpretation of works by John Cage\, John Zorn\, and Sofia Gubaidulina was described as “extraordinary\,” “virtuosic\,” “stunning\,” “fabulous\,” and “mesmerizing” by the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, Los Angeles Times\, San Francisco Classical Voice\, and others. \nShe also earned a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Music Pedagogy from Halvetic Music Institute-Private Institute for Continuing Education in Music Pedagogy and Music Therapy in Bellinzona (Switzerland) and lives with her family in New York City. Ljubinka speaks English\, German\, Italian\, Greek\, and Serbian/Croatian.

SUMMARY:Destination Moon\, a play by Joseph Reed Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Two people in two little rooms. A young woman\, a bed\, an unseen voice\, music in the night\, hope out of darkness. When we meet Truly in her room at the end of the hall\, she is on her way to recovery\, having spent years in and out of hospitals combating serious illness since she was a child. She’ll be going home soon\, with every likelihood of a “normal” life. And home might as well be the moon. Truly deals with her fears by writing bad songs\, reading odd old books and communing with Doc Miller\, an unseen radio voice in the night.
