DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

DESCRIPTION:Applications are open now for the 2025 Asheville Fringe Arts Festival! Festival dates are March 16-23\, 2025\, with most paid performances taking place between Thursday\, March 20 to Sunday\, March 23. There is no fee to apply. \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival provides artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work\, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences. Our continual goal is to curate experiences that expand the minds and hearts of our audiences and to be inclusive of artists who work within a myriad of genres\, styles\, and forms to create truly unique and original pieces in our community.  \nWe accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length\, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length\, your piece may be grouped with another show\, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public\, and artists receive a stipend for their performance\, rather than relying on door sales.  \nThe Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a juried festival.\nWe carefully review each and every submission. Applicants must show their work (or fully present their concept) at a short virtual or in-person adjudication session in October or November. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

How do we move with the grace of balance\, turning inward and having gratitude for our bodies and all things? DESCRIPTION:Join the passionate gardeners and volunteers of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden on September 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for the garden’s 20th Anniversary Celebration! The evening will include an original play created and performed by community members; live music; a delicious dinner prepared by local restaurants and gardeners\, and a cash bar. Tickets are $40 in advance\, $50 at the door. Student (college and grade school) tickets $25. Children 6 years and under are free. A silent auction will offer local adventures\, activities\, and services that will enrich your year spiritually\, mentally\, and physically\, and you can test your luck on three unique raffle baskets.  \nThe original play will be this event’s crown jewel. With the help of local community theater playwright and director Jerry Pope\, the garden’s community has woven a tapestry of stories from a myriad of voices. The resulting compilation of memories is sure to make you laugh\, cry\, and reminisce! These stories touch the humanity in all of us and the endless connections that we have with the universe around us.  \nThe goal for the 20th Anniversary Celebration is to raise $20\,000! Proceeds from this event provide financial support for the garden’s interns so that they can focus on learning good growing techniques and in-turn share that knowledge with others and give back to the community. Proceeds also allow the garden to bring in excellent educators for workshops to educate the community about gardening\, native and medicinal plants\, and more. The rest of the revenue will be set aside as seed money for a new structure to replace the current barn. The community hopes that the new structure can include processing capabilities\, educational space\,  cold storage\, and an office for the full-time garden manager. Additional donations are enthusiastically welcomed to help realize this vision! \nProviding food for hundreds of local families\, the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden is a vital resource in helping reduce food insecurity in the Swannanoa Valley. Each year\, residents and volunteers come together to grow fresh produce that is distributed to families in need. The garden relies heavily on the work of interns to assist in the growing process and to educate the public on sustainable growing techniques. This fundraiser serves as one of the best opportunities for the community to come together and learn about the purpose and benefits of the Dr. John Wilson Community Garden. The book is co-written by team members from the Asheville-based Campaign for Southern Equality\, a leader in the work to protect trans youth and their families across the South and\, through the Trans Youth Emergency Project\, nationwide.  This launch event in Asheville\, hosted at Citizen Vinyl in partnership with Malaprop’s Bookstore\, will include a reading from TRANS KIDS\, OUR KIDS; a panel discussion that includes co-authors Alexis Stratton\, Adam Polaski\, and Jasmine Beach-Ferrara\, cover designer Liz Williams\, and team members from the Campaign for Southern Equality; a Q&A focused on how you can take action; and a book signing. She was a resident comedian at Comedy Key West and has headlined at many other Key West stages. She has been chosen to perform at prestigious festivals including Boston Comedy and Hampton Beach. She has competed at the Massachusetts and New England’s Funniest competitions. Her popular blog “Diary of a Fathlete” has been highlighted in many publications. She currently performs all over the country. A clean comic\, audiences relate to her dry\, and awkward take on everyday situations. Her inspiration comes from working with the general public for more than 20 years\, traveling the world and mostly the clarity that comes from a good nap. She would almost always rather be home on her couch with her dog.
