SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Ginny Ruffner Reforestation of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present Ginny Ruffner’s Reforestation of the Imagination\, organized and toured by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition imagines an apocalyptic landscape of withered plant forms that come to life when activated with augmented reality. In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Exhibition themes will correspond to the chapters of co-curator David Silver’s book on this topic\, to be published in conjunction with the exhibition in partnership with Atelier Editions. \nCurated by David Silver and Bruce Johansen

They help prevent erosion\, filter pollution from runoff\, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. MountainTrue staff and volunteers spend significant time and resources removing nonnative invasive plants along streams and lake shorelines to protect water quality and ensure that the native vegetation stays healthy. \n**Please note: several of these plants and shrubs may be “dormant” or cut back. This is normal and not a cause for concern. Here is an article explaining dormancy in plants. \nFor the full species descriptions or to sign up to receive an email notification when the sale goes live\, please visit the event page. \nPlants that are found here inspire a “sense of place” and pride in our mountain communities and promote wise stewardship and conservation of natural resources. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading with Wayne Caldwell: River Road
DESCRIPTION:Wayne Caldwell will visit City Lights on Friday\, October 4th at 6:00pm to read from his new poetry collection\, River Road. \nRiver Road is a collection of narrative poems in the voice of Susan McFalls\, writing from her new home in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. \nWayne Caldwell\, author of Cataloochee\, returns to North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains to continue the story of Susan McFalls\, who is left on Mount Pisgah after the death of her dear friend and neighbor Posey Green. These poems follow Susan as she moves to and renovates an old house on River Road\, vividly bringing to life the wild and beautiful land and culture of the Blue Ridge and the cherished memories and new friends that continue to anchor her to this special place. \nRiver Road is a companion to Caldwell’s first poetry collection\, Woodsmoke\, and while the two can stand alone\, together they paint a fuller picture of friendship\, loss\, and the ways in which lives are shaped by the North Carolina mountains. \nWayne Caldwell is the author of the novels Cataloochee (2007) and Requiem by Fire (2010) and the poetry collection Woodsmoke (2021). He has won the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award from the Western North Carolina Historical Association\, and the James Still Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers. He lives with his wife\, Mary\, just west of Asheville\, on land that has been in her family since 1831. In his spare time\, he works up firewood.

SUMMARY:Reading with Andrew Clark and Nathan Ballingrud
DESCRIPTION:Andrew K. Clark and Nathan Ballingrud will visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday\, October 5th at 3:00pm to share their new books\, Where Dark Things Grow and Crypt of the Moon Spider. \n“If you’re a fan of magical realism and Appalachian Gothic\, Andrew K. Clark’s Where Dark Things Grow is a must-read—a high and haunting tale of highland lore that burns with forces both dark and light\, rendered with a poet’s eye for detail and wild sparks of wonder.”—Taylor Brown\, author of Rednecks \nIn his debut novel\, Where Dark Things Grow\, poet Andrew K. Clark blends magical realism\, horror\, and Southern Gothic to create a beautifully rendered and dark tale. Leo is a troubled fifteen-year-old growing up in rural\, Depression-era Appalachia with unstable parents\, two useless brothers\, his sick baby sister\, Goldfish\, and the memory of his deceased brother\, Jacob. When his father goes missing\, Leo’s attempts to help his family and find his father bring him into contact with mythical beasts\, alchemists\, prostitutes\, and Jacob’s ghost\, who may or may not be an evil spirit. \nAs Leo navigates his place in the physical world and magical realms around him\, he struggles with the legacy of his father and his own dark desires. Will he be able to save those touched by illness\, insanity\, and greed? Can he shake his own connection to an ancient evil and find a better path? Step into the world of Andrew K. Clark’s Where Dark Things Grow to find out. \nCrypt of the Moon Spider is a dark and dreamy tale of horror\, corruption\, and identity spun into the stickiest of webs. \nYears ago\, in a cave beneath the dense forests and streams on the surface of the moon\, a gargantuan spider once lived. Its silk granted its first worshippers immense faculties of power and awe. \nIt’s now 1923 and Veronica Brinkley is touching down on the moon for her intake at the Barrowfield Home for Treatment of the Melancholy. A renowned facility\, Dr. Barrington Cull’s invasive and highly successful treatments have been lauded by many. And they’re so simple! All it takes is a little spider silk in the amygdala\, maybe a strand or two in the prefrontal cortex\, and perhaps an inch in the hippocampus for near evisceration of those troublesome thoughts and ideas. \nBut patients aren’t the only ones with trouble on their minds\, and although the spider’s been dead for years\, its denizens are not. Someone or something is up to no good\, and Veronica just might be the cause. \nAndrew K. Clark’s poetry collection\, Jesus in the Trailer\, was published by Main Street Rag Press\, and his debut novel\, Where Dark Things Grow\, is forthcoming from Cowboy Jamboree Press. His work has appeared in The American Journal of Poetry\, UCLA’s Out of Anonymity\, Appalachian Review\, Rappahannock Review\, and The Wrath Bearing Tree. He received his MFA from Converse College. A Western North Carolina native\, Clark lives outside Asheville\, NC. Connect with him at andrewkclark.com or on social media through Threads\, X\, Instagram\, Facebook\, or TikTok: @theandrewkclark. \nNathan Ballingrud\, winner of the Shirley Jackson Award\, is the author of The Strange\, Wounds: Six Stories from the Border of Hell\, and North American Lake Monsters\, which was adapted into the Hulu series Monsterland. His work has been shortlisted for the World Fantasy\, British Fantasy\, and Bram Stoker awards. He lives in Asheville\, NC.
