DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina.  \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

In collaboration with animator and media artist Grant Kirkpatrick\, Ruffner illuminates the delicate balance between nature and the artificial human-built world around us\, putting forth an optimistic hope for the future: that technology can be a means to understand and help save the earth from environmental devastation. Visitors can download the free app “Reforestation” on their phones or use the iPads in the gallery to bring this second reality to life.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Farm at Black Mountain College
DESCRIPTION:Built on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, this exhibition will constitute a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nThe opening reception and a keynote lecture will take place in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s annual ReVIEWING conference hosted at UNC Asheville. Exhibition themes will correspond to the chapters of co-curator David Silver’s book on this topic\, to be published in conjunction with the exhibition in partnership with Atelier Editions.  \nCurated by David Silver and Bruce Johansen

SUMMARY:Historic Johnson Farm Christmas Tours
DESCRIPTION:On weekdays from December 2 through 20\, Historic Johnson Farm will host daytime Christmas tours. Tour the decorated historic house\, visit the Heritage Weavers & Fiber Artists\, and enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. Guided tours are at 10:30 AM each day. While drop-ins are allowed\, those with reservations take priority\, so please consider making a reservation. Guided daytime tours are $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors (65 and over)\, and free for those 4 and under.  \nGroups of 10 or more are welcome to reserve private group tours at 1:30 PM each weekday for a group rate of $8 per person\, but they must reserve ahead of time by calling 828-891-6585 or emailing jfarm@hcpsnc.org. \nIf you are looking for a holiday gift or a stocking stuffer\, purchase a farm item. Mugs\, ornaments\, and magnets with the farm logo will be for sale along with stickers with the farm’s animals. The popular children’s book about the farm\, Winston the Farm Dog: A History of Historic Johnson Farm\, will be for sale as well. The Heritage Weavers and Fiber Artists gift shop will be stocked full of handmade fiber gifts. \nThe farmhouse was built by hand from 1876-1880. It is believed to be the oldest standing brick home in Henderson County. The Christmas season was a special time for Johnson family members\, who were known for their generosity.  Their home was among the first in our county to get electricity.  For many Christmas seasons\, they placed their tree decorated with colorful lights on the front porch. Travelers enjoyed the glow of the display to and from town in the evenings. Throughout the year and especially at holidays\, Sallie Johnson was known for her delicious cakes.  The farm grounds were plush with greenery that was gathered to decorate their home. The celebration of Christmas was much simpler then.   \nThe Christmas tours are important for the non-profit foundation that operates a heritage education center as part of Henderson County Public Schools. Events like this provide a significant portion of the farm’s operating expenses and educational experiences.  \nThe farm was a gift to the schoolchildren and the community by the late Vernon and Leander Johnson.  It is owned by Henderson County Public Schools\, and is managed by an Executive Director and the Historic Johnson Farm Foundation\, Inc.  It was designated a NC Cultural Treasure. The public is invited to vote for their favorite trees by donating money \, every dollar is equal to 1 vote. Votes are unlimited\, and you can vote for as many trees as you’d like! Nativity displays may be viewed in the dining room at First Baptist Church of Asheville beginning Friday\, December 6 through Sunday\, December 15. The exhibit will be open to the public weekdays 5-8PM\, Saturdays 10AM-8PM\, and Sundays 12PM-8PM. School groups\, retirement communities\, or special press visits can be arranged by emailing ashevillenativity@gmail.com. The complete schedule can be found at www.ashevillenativity.org. Over 250 Nativity scenes from around the world will be on display. This family-friendly event includes a life-size stable with costumes.\nA crèche\, often called a Nativity scene\, is an artistic representation of the birth of Jesus Christ. While focusing on the central figures of the mother Mary and Christ Child\, crèche artists often telescope time and place to bring together a host of earthly and heavenly participants—shepherds\, animals\, wise men\, angels\, and commoners.\nFor centuries\, the crèche as an art form has flourished in homes and churches worldwide. Whether the crèche depicts 19th-century Italian villagers dressed in silks and jewels or contemporary African animal herders crafted from clay\, each representation reflects the unique talents\, circumstances and culture of the artist.\nThis exhibit is an ecumenical effort to highlight the cultural diversity of each crèche on display\, while honoring and celebrating the common theme that runs throughout—the birth of Jesus.\nPast events have included participation from seven different Asheville area churches and displayed over 250 unique Nativity sets from seventy countries around the world. Thousands of people attend the exhibit each year. Guest comments included: “Awesome!” “Wonderful!” “Lovely!” “Words cannot express the beauty.” “Impressive and beautifully done.”\nThe event is free to the public. Donations are welcome. DESCRIPTION:BMCM+AC will host David Silver\, co-curator of The Farm at Black Mountain College\, for a gallery walk-and-talk alongside a book launch / signing event. Join us for an in-depth look at the Farm story and a celebration of the exhibition. This event is free and open to all. \nBuilt on more than a decade’s worth of deep\, original archival research\, The Farm at Black Mountain College constitutes a comprehensive new history of Black Mountain College. By focusing on the farm\, the exhibition sidesteps the popular paradigm of approaching BMC through its famous faculty and students\, and instead offers a new cast of characters\, one that includes mostly students\, women\, and farmers. It spotlights the importance of collaboration\, both on campus among students\, faculty\, and faculty families\, and in the community with farmers and organizations in nearby cities and towns. Finally\, the exhibition shows what happens when communal living is no longer communal\, and offers the first ever detailed account of the fall of the college\, a dramatic and often dangerous story. \nPresented in BMCM+AC’s lower gallery\, the contemporary installation DEER FREAKS…and decoys explores the hyper-natural forces of attraction and repulsion informing our interactions with the landscapes we inhabit. From fence rows to scare-crows\, DEER FREAKS documents the creative ways people propagate\, shape\, lure\, and protect in their environments. This multi-media\, multi-layered project of Swannatopia responds to the themes of The Farm at Black Mountain College.
