SUMMARY:sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians
DESCRIPTION:On view from March 15\, 2024 through February 28\, 2025\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty: Expressions in Sovereignty of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ illuminates the complexities of tribal sovereignty and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ continuing legacy of resilience.\nFeaturing objects sourced from the Museum of the Cherokee People’s own collections\, ‘sov·er·eign·ty’ is designed to educate visitors about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ autonomy\, its relationship with the federal government\, and how the tribe has defined its own relationship with its land\, people\, and culture. \nThe Museum of the Cherokee People is the tribal museum of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI)\, one of three federally recognized Cherokee tribes alongside Cherokee Nation and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians. The EBCI is a self-governed\, autonomous nation with over 16\,000 enrolled members living around the world—it has its own laws\, elections\, and government—and is the only federally recognized Tribal Nation within the boundaries of what is currently known as North Carolina. \nIn this exhibition\, visitors will learn how\, through adaptability and innovation\, the EBCI has combated attempts to eradicate\, remove\, and assimilate its people and remained on the Qualla Boundary—57\,000 acres (0.00067661% of the original Cherokee territory) which is owned by the EBCI and held in trust by the federal government.

SUMMARY:Exhibition | Forces of Nature: Ceramics from the Hayes Collection
DESCRIPTION:Ceramic artists throughout history have become masters of all four elements—creating clay from a mixture of earth and water to shape their work\, drying it in air\, and hardening it in fire. Throughout this process\, the artist decides which aspects of the work will be tightly controlled\, and when the elements can step in to leave nature’s mark. This exhibition traces the historical\, stylistic\, and conceptual origins of work that either embraces or refuses the element of chance in ceramics\, looking at modern and contemporary work made in Western North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Christie Lenée & Crys Matthews at The Grey Eagle
DESCRIPTION:Two of today’s best guitarists/singer-songwriters join forces for a night of music in Asheville! \nChristie Lenée is an award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and fingerstyle guitarist known for her unique style that blends folk-pop\, jazz\, blues\, and classical music. A Tampa native and North Carolina resident\, Lenée took First Place at the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in 2017\, was voted Acoustic Guitarist of the Year by England’s MusicRadar in 2019\, and was named Named “Best Acoustic Guitarists in the World Right Now” by Guitar World in 2020 \nCrys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. Matthews also won the People Music Network Social Justice Songs contest at the 2017 Northeast Regional Folk Alliance.

SUMMARY:The Art of Fiber and Textiles Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Art League is proud to present “The Art of Fiber and Textiles\,” an exhibition that showcases the innovative spirit and enduring traditions of these versatile mediums. The Art League has invited artists from Local Cloth to participate in this special exhibit giving our community an opportunity to view a wide variety of material and design. The Art League was fortunate to escape significant damage from Hurricane Helene\, but Local Cloth was almost completely destroyed by flood waters and debris\, which knocked out their front door and windows and rose inside the walls to more than 10 feet. \n The exhibit will run from February 1\, 2025 to February 21\, 2025 at The Art Place gallery\, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of ancient traditions and contemporary artistry. An opening reception will provide an opportunity for visitors to meet the artists on February 1\, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. \n The exhibition aims to highlight works rooted in traditional fiber materials\, structures\, processes\, and history\, while also celebrating pieces that push the boundaries of fiber art by exploring unexpected relationships with other creative disciplines. From felted sculptures to intricate embroidery and multimedia assemblages\, “Material Wealth” presents fiber art as a dynamic and evolving creative expression. \n The exhibit is open to the following including derivations and combinations of materials:\nFelting: A process that compresses fibers into dense\, durable fabrics or sculptures.\nQuilting: Layering and stitching fabrics to create intricate patterns and textures.\nWeaving: Crafting textiles by interlacing threads in structured patterns.\nEmbroidery: Ornamental stitching that adds detail and narrative to fabrics.\nLace Making: Creating delicate patterns by looping and twisting threads.\nPaper-making: Transforming fibrous materials into handcrafted sheets.\nMixed Media Assemblages: Integrating fiber with other materials for multidimensional works.

DESCRIPTION:Director: Victoria Lamberth \nApproximate Run Time: 2 hours\, 5 minutes\nRating: PG-13 due to adult language and situations. Conversations addressing prejudice\, racism\, and bigotry. \nA progressive white couple’s proud liberal sensibilities are tested when their daughter brings her black fiance home to meet them in this fresh and relevant stage adaptation of the iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Blindsided by their daughter’s whirlwind romance and fearful for her future\, Matt and Christina Drayton quickly realize the difference between supporting a mixed-race couple in your newspaper and welcoming one into your family–especially in 1967. SUMMARY:Guess Who's Coming to Dinner
But they’re surprised to find they aren’t the only ones concerned about the match\, and it’s only a short time before a multi-family clash of racial and generational difference sweeps across the Draytons’ idyllic San Francisco terrace. Will the love between young Joanna and John prevail? With humor and insight\, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner begins a conversation sure to continue at dinner tables long after the curtain comes down. \nThe cast of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: \nKip Brown – Monsignor Ryan \nNatasha Charles* – Mary Prentice \nRixa Clark* – Joanna Drayton \nPamela Flasch* – Christina Drayton \nSarah Leatham – Hilary St. George \nRonnie Pepper – John Prentice\, Sr. \nDoug Sparks – Matt Drayton \nRowena Strong* – Tillie \nElijah York – Dr. John Prentice \n*Making their Hendersonville Theatre debut
