DESCRIPTION:“Looking Back To Move Forward” features the work of fifty three artists (thirty eight students\, nine alumni\, five faculty and one staff) who created work addressing both the devastation and the ongoing recovery – compelled to investigate\, reflect\, mourn and raise awareness of the many issues the storm revealed.  \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between Art students\, faculty\, and alumni and faculty and students in Environmental Studies\, Economics\, and Biology\, and is part of the Post-Helene Symposium that the university is hosting September 23 – 27\, 2025. A panel discussion with several artists will be moderated by Susan Andrew of Riverlink\, a local non-profit who was heavily involved in clean-up and restoration efforts.

SUMMARY:Tunnel Studios Inaugural Open Studio Event
DESCRIPTION:Tunnel Studios\, a new artist studio collective and gallery space in East Asheville\, will open its doors to the public on Sunday\, September 21\, from 12–6 p.m. for its first Open Studio event. Located at 940 Tunnel Road\, the historic building was originally constructed in 1948 by jewelry maker Stuart Nye\, who also built the Southern Highland Craft Guild gallery next door\, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. \nThe event will feature the work of eleven artists in residence\, including Katherine Caldwell (woven wheat)\, Sarah Carawan (mixed media)\, Lissa Friedman (oil paintings)\, Mitch Kolbe (oil paintings)\, Elizabeth Walton (jewelry)\, Deb Kolp (painting and mixed media)\, Aaron Rose (textiles)\, Chelsey Noel (mixed media and textiles)\, Wren Ribble (mixed media)\, Elena Ribble (jewelry)\, and Jude Stuecker (textiles). \nTunnel Studios is the result of a unique collaboration between neighbors and friends. Co-owners Jude Stuecker and Paul Dixon are married\, as are fellow co-owners Will Eccleston and Allison Williams. The four decided to embark on the renovation project together\, unified by their shared interest in preserving Asheville’s craft history and providing more space for artists to work and connect. All four owners have brought their own specific skills to the project\, sharing the burden in a way that feels equitable and inspiring.    \n“I really loved the building and the history of it\,” said Stuecker\, “specifically Stuart Nye’s role in the craft scene in Asheville starting in the 1920s and ’30s. The building was designed for making art\, and I wanted to preserve its use and intention. I also thought we could bring more of the art scene to East Asheville and provide opportunities to artists who needed spaces\, specifically those who were displaced during Helene.” \nDixon emphasized the architectural importance of the structure. “I was drawn to the building’s style of ‘Rustic Modernism’ and its role in Asheville’s craft history\,” Dixon said. “Preserving this space for creative work just felt like the right thing to do.”\n“I was excited to join Jude and Paul in this endeavor as it is an opportunity for us to connect with and even add to the creative community in Asheville\,” said Williams. “I have loved being a part of it all and seeing the space evolve into what it is now.” \nEccleston adds\, “When I think about all of the things this building could’ve become\, it feels good to be a part of making it Tunnel Studios.” \nArtists also share a deep enthusiasm for their new space. Jeweler Elizabeth Walton said\, “Moving into this studio is particularly special to me because I did a summer internship for Stuart Nye Jewelry when I was 14. Getting to move into this building now with my own jewelry business feels so full circle. The building has so much history both personally and communally and I hope to carry that spirit forward through the growth I anticipate happening as a result of being part of Tunnel Studios.” \nFor painter Mitch Kolbe\, this will be the first time in decades that he has had a working studio outside of his home. “It will be nice to once again have a space that is large enough that I can do both painting and sculpting in the same space\,” he said. “We are even planning to use the front room as a little show space for those artists that are interested in a little retail store. The possibilities are endless really and I’m so grateful that this historical gem in East Asheville was saved as a real working artist space.” \nWheat weaver Katherine Caldwell reflects on the building’s legacy. “I love that it has always been used—in fact was designed—for craft work\,” Caldwell said. “Although we are creating different things in different ways\, I love that the vibe has always been to maintain a business from working with one’s hands. There is so much history of steady handiwork there. To me it is a testimony to the focus being on the daily work going on inside and not the trappings of trendy stylings to work environment. DESCRIPTION:FLAT ROCK\, N.C.  — Amber Joy Koeppen brings her angelic harp playing to St. John in the Wilderness Sunday\, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. for a free concert in the spacious Parish Hall at 1905 Greenville Highway across from the church in Flat Rock. Handicapped accessibility and free parking are available. Donations will be gratefully accepted for the Friends of Music and the Arts Series.  \nFrom Genesis to Revelation\, the Bible has numerous references to harp music which has been said to have healing properties. One of the oldest musical instruments in the world\, the harp originated in Mesopotamia more than 2\,000 years ago.  \nClassically trained\, Amber Joy Koeppen mastered the modern harp more than 20 years ago\, winning First Place in the Rosen-Schaffer Competition for Young and Emerging Artists. She has continued to receive many awards for her solo concert performances while also performing with the New York City Ballet\, the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Teaching children and Adults in her private music studio enables Amber Joy to share her passion for artistic excellence and creativity with her students who are also award-winning active musicians. In addition to her promotion of arts education\, she currently serves as Director for Appalachian State’s Community Music School providing musical education in the North Carolina High Country in partnership with Hayes School of Music.  \nThe September 21 concert will feature an afternoon of harp music highlighting works of composers such as Gliere\, Piazzolla\, Debussy\, Salzedo and more.  \nHarpist Amber Koeppen will share an eclectic collection of some of her favorite works for solo harp and will also be joined by two special guest students for the incredible experience of hearing three harps playing together. We are almost one year in three days that Asheville is bouncing back in many ways!  In Asheville\, NC many roads and neighborhoods have been cleaned up\, rebuilding of many homes and communities have taken place and shops and stores are open!  Many of our dancers showed up to the 5Rhythms® practice on Weds nights when we had water restrictions. Homewood provided a portable water station and hand sanitizer was provided for us to wash our hands.  I am so appreciative for our dance community members to show up in this way!  Asheville and our 5Rhythms® practice have been able to adapt and bounce back in many ways.  We ought to be proud and appreciative of our resilience.  Join us in this movement exploration. DESCRIPTION:The ReVIEWING Black Mountain College conference is a forum for scholars and artists to contribute original work on topics related to Black Mountain College and its place in cultural history. \nThe format is designed to be interdisciplinary\, with sessions that will include panels\, presentations\, performances\, and workshops. BMC itself was a uniquely interdisciplinary organization\, generating output from its faculty and students that often involved the melding of the visual\, performing\, and literary arts. Each year\, conference participation reflects this; past presentations have explored wide-ranging\, fruitful intersections such as (to name just a few of the most recent examples) how Charles Olson’s “projectivist” poetics inspired works on the stage and screen; the influence of choreographer Merce Cunningham on Abstract Expressionist painters trained at BMC such as Pat Passlof and James Bishop; the photography of poet-publisher-artist Jonathan Williams; the path from BMC’s first Summer Institute in honor of Arnold Schoenberg\, to the design and philosophy of contemporary summer arts programs today; a performance connecting Ruth Asawa’s sculpture to contemporary dance; and a workshop offering attendees the opportunity to weave on looms with found materials\, as Anni Albers’ BMC students did. \nThe conference is hosted annually in the fall. ReVIEWING 15 will take place September 26 – 28th\, 2025\, presented in conjunction with BMCM+AC’s fall 2025 exhibition\, Points in Space: Performance at Black Mountain College\, organized by Jeff Arnal\, curator\, and Adolfo Alzuphar\, curatorial assistant. Black Mountain College’s interdisciplinary and collaborative philosophy fostered groundbreaking time-based experiments across disciplines\, significantly influencing performance\, theater\, film\, music\, dance\, and visual art worldwide. The exhibition will feature visual and time-based artworks that echo BMC’s innovative spirit from 1933 to 1957 including historical and contemporary works\, interactive installations\, performances\, and immersive experiences that bring the past into conversation with the present.  \n— \nKeynote Speaker: Debra McCall \nDebra McCall is a dance historian\, choreographer\, Certified Movement Analyst\, and performer best known for her reconstructions of Oskar Schlemmer’s 1920s Bauhaus Dances. Recipient of fellowships from the NEA and the NEH\, she also received the Rome Prize in Design from the American Academy in Rome and a Fulbright-Nehru Professional and Academic Excellence Award for her documentation of medieval reliefs of sacred dancers at the Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram\, Tamil Nadu. McCall served on the graduate faculties of New York University and Pratt Institute where she was Mellon Lecturer. Her Bauhaus work has been presented in a variety of venues including Performa 09\, Artissima 17 Torino\, and Harvard University’s The Bauhaus and Harvard: 100 years.
